Steep walking — Amazement — Enjoyment: Wine festival in the Neckar steep slopes
The steep slopes are a special feature of Württemberg viticulture: for centuries, vines have been cultivated on the slopes above the Neckar, often on terraces and dry stone walls, with gradients of 30% or more. Machine work is impossible here — all cultivation is done by hand. This makes the steep slopes valuable in terms of ecology and cultural history, and their wines highly rated specialties.
The Steep Slope Days 2026 run from Friday, July 3rd, to Sunday, July 5th, in the steep slopes between Neckarweihingen and Poppenweiler — both districts of Ludwigsburg on the Neckar. Four participating wineries — Weingut Kleinle, Weinbau Kopp, Weingärtner Marbach, and the Steile Helden project — are opening their vineyards and courtyards.
The motto perfectly captures the three pillars of the festival: Steep walking means hiking and strolling through the slopes — from short, leisurely tours for an aperitif to challenging, multi-hour exploration tours with several stops. Amazement refers to the panoramic views of the Neckar, Ludwigsburg Castle, the Marbacher Wirtshaus am See, and the wine landscape. Enjoyment encompasses wine tastings and culinary specialties from Manufaktur Mörsel (Ludwigsburg delicatessen producer) as well as local caterers.
Weingut Kleinle: Family-run winery in Neckarweihingen focusing on Trollinger, Lemberger, and Riesling. Weinbau Kopp: Medium-sized winery in the region. Weingärtner Marbach: Cooperative of Marbach steep slope vintners with over 100 member wine merchants. Steile Helden: Project by young winemakers from the region dedicated to preserving the steep slopes.
An oldtimer bus shuttles between the stops — from the Poppenweiler sports field, the shuttle runs all day for €2 per person. This allows you to visit different stops and taste wines from various wineries without extensive hiking.
