The Kick-off of the fill in Jazz Festival
fill in AVENUE is the public, free opening event of the fill in — International Jazz Festival Saar. The main festival takes place in the summer at the E-Werk on the Saar terraces, but the season begins with this one-day open-air event in the Eurobahnhof quarter of Saarbrücken. The entire festival was initiated in 2023 by artistic director Oliver Strauch and has since established itself as the most important jazz platform in the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region.
The Eurobahnhof Quarter
The venue is the Europaallee in front of the former bus workshop — an industrial monument in the Eurobahnhof quarter, which the city of Saarbrücken has activated as a cultural space in recent years. The GIU (Gesellschaft für Innovation und Unternehmensförderung), the operator of the quarter, is a cooperation partner of the festival. Its location directly at the main train station (five minutes' walk) makes the event optimally accessible.
Program Structure
The format is deliberately accessible:
- Children's Concert by the Hochschule für Musik Saar — young musicians open the festival
- Lorraine Jazz Patrol Marching Band in three sets — the marching band from Lorraine marches through the Europaallee, great atmosphere as they pass by
- Niklas Müller (trumpet and keyboards) and Nicci Apiah (drums) as the finale — danceable jazz beats for the late afternoon and evening
- Food trucks and drink stands throughout
Saarbrücken as a Jazz City
Saarbrücken — the state capital of Saarland and the cultural center of the Regionalverband Saarbrücken — has consciously positioned itself as a jazz city in recent years. The Hochschule für Musik Saar trains jazz musicians at the highest level, and the fill in Festival brings international stars like Yellowjackets, Rebekka Bakken, or Mario Biondi to the city. fill in AVENUE forms the public face of this initiative.
Who Should Visit
Anyone who wants to experience jazz in a relaxed open-air atmosphere without the formality of a concert hall is in the right place. Families are explicitly welcome — the children's concert at the beginning is a highlight for the little ones. Admission is completely free.
