Early Summer Festival of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Warndt
Großrosseln is located directly on the French border in the Warndt, a landscape shaped by forests and mining history west of Saarbrücken. The municipality's volunteer fire brigade is divided into several districts - the Eastern District covers an eastern part of the town and traditionally organizes its fire brigade festival at the end of May at its own fire station.
Like many fire brigade festivals in Saarland, the event combines sociability with club work. The focus is on bratwurst, fries, Schwenker (the Saarland national dish), coffee, cake, beer, and refreshments - all prepared by the active members and supporting members themselves. The proceeds go towards equipment, the youth fire brigade, and club life.
On one of the festival days, the fire station is usually open to visitors: fire engines to see, demonstrations, technical exercises, and conversations with the active members. Children typically enjoy spraying water from the hose and rides on the fire engine.
Fire brigade festivals are an important pillar of club life in Saarland. They contribute to the visibility of the volunteer fire brigade in the community, help finance parts of the voluntary work, and create encounters between citizens, the mayor, and firefighters. In Großrosseln, where the population is linked to the mining and industrial history of the Warndt, these festivals are a firm part of the annual calendar.
Its location on the German-French border also makes Großrosseln interesting for tourism. The Warndt forest, the neighboring Petite-Rosselle in France (with the historic Carreau Wendel mining museum), and the Warndt pond system are just a stone's throw away - a visit to the fire brigade festival can be easily combined with a walk along the border.
The weekend of May 23 and 24, 2026, is reserved for the Eastern District's fire brigade festival, according to the official event calendar of the municipality of Großrosseln. The detailed program will be published shortly before the festival on the municipal website.
The final program will be announced before the festival on grossrosseln.de and on local notice boards.
