History You Can Touch on the Bastion

Senftenberg Fortress is one of Brandenburg's best-preserved Saxon Renaissance fortresses — founded in the 13th century, expanded into a fortress in the 16th/17th centuries, and the scene of several military conflicts between Saxony and Prussia in the 18th century. It is precisely this era that the Fortress Spectacle in the Lusatian city brings to life: Reenactment groups from Saxony, Brandenburg, and the Czech Republic set up historical camps, portray troops in authentic uniforms, and demonstrate rifle volleys, cannon fire, and 18th-century camp life.

Date 2026 — September, Exact Date TBA

The 2026 edition is planned for September 2026 — the exact date will be confirmed by the organizer during the year (historically, the fortress spectacles usually took place in mid-September). Opening hours: Saturday 10 AM–6 PM, Sunday 11 AM–4 PM. The venue is the entire fortress area, including the castle, bastion, and castle garden.

Program — Reenactment, Market, Dance

The spectacle combines several historically authentic program points:

  • Reenactment Camps: Saxon and Prussian troops in authentic uniforms set up their tents. Visitors can experience camp life firsthand — cleaning muskets, cooking over a fire, repairing uniforms.
  • Rifle Volleys and Cannon Fire: Demonstrations with black powder several times a day. Warning — loud! Hearing protection strongly recommended for children.
  • Military Music: Fife and drum corps play 18th-century marches.
  • Historical Market: Blacksmiths, bakers, basket weavers, sutlers — all in period clothing, selling historically appropriate goods.
  • Baroque Dances: Demonstrations of historical dances in the castle garden, with workshops for brave visitors.
  • Puppet Theatre: for children, staged in a historical setting.
  • Show Formations: Bayonet drill, saber fencing, line formation demonstration

Senftenberg Fortress and Town

Senftenberg is the district town of Landkreis Oberspreewald-Lausitz, located on the edge of the Lausitzer Seenland (Lusatian Lake District) — Europe's largest artificial lake landscape, created from reclaimed lignite mining areas. The fortress is situated in the town center, directly on the Senftenberger See, one of the region's most popular swimming lakes. Visitors to the Fortress Spectacle should combine their weekend with a walk by the lake, a visit to the town church, and a harbor tour.

Reenactment of Brandenburg Standard

The Senftenberg Fortress Spectacle is among the most authentic reenactment events in Brandenburg. Unlike larger spectacles (such as the Victory Festival in Großbeeren), the format here is more intimate, the fortress is a historically fitting venue, and camp life is directly accessible to visitors. If you want to see what an 18th-century musketeer battalion was really like — this is the place.
