Summer concert of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Hohen Luckow Castle and Estate Park
Hohen Luckow Castle, an imposing baroque building in the Rostock district, is one of the venues for the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — the decentralized festival that hosts around 120 concerts at approximately 90 locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern every summer. For decades, the festival has aimed to bring classical music out of the grand halls and perform it in churches, barns, parks, and castles.
The concert day format is a small production in itself. The day begins at 12 PM with a house tour of the castle and the surrounding estate, which is not only historically significant but also agriculturally active and operates biodynamically. At 3 PM, coffee and cake are served in the castle park — time to chat with other guests and enjoy the atmosphere. At 4 PM, the actual concert begins in one of the historic rooms or, weather permitting, in the park.
The Berlin-based Armida Quartet is among Germany's most internationally sought-after young string quartets and is the Artist in Residence for the Festspiele MV in 2026. This means the quartet will curate several festival concerts at various venues, thematically under the motto of an "ecological-musical exploration tour" — a connection between nature conservation, sustainable land use, and classical repertoire, which seems particularly fitting in Hohen Luckow.
Gut Hohen Luckow in the municipality of Satow, Rostock district, is a prime example of how historic buildings and modern agriculture can go hand in hand. The 17th-century castle has been extensively renovated and is now the center of a biodynamically managed estate covering over 1,000 hectares. Concerts, equestrian sports, arts and crafts, and farm education days take place here throughout the year. With castles like Hohen Luckow, Bothmer, and Ludwigslust, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasts an unusual density of well-preserved noble residences.
The day in Hohen Luckow is designed as a small journey. It begins at 12 PM with a house tour of the castle and the estate, which is managed biodynamically. At 3 PM, coffee and cake are served in the park. At 4 PM, the concert by the Armida Quartet begins.
The internationally renowned Berlin string quartet is the Artist in Residence for the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2026 and will curate several festival concerts at various venues in MV. In Hohen Luckow, the concert is themed "On an Ecological-Musical Exploration Tour with the Armida Quartet" — a programmatic connection between classical music and the biodynamic agriculture of the host estate.
