Largest village folk festival in the Münsterland — three days of festivities around St. James' Day
The Jacobi-Kirmes Ascheberg is considered the largest village folk festival in the Münsterland — an accolade that the Westphalian district of Coesfeld takes seriously. The fact that a community of only around 16,000 inhabitants can host such a large folk festival is due to the centuries-old tradition of pilgrimage to St. James' Day (July 25) — the patronal feast of the parish. The 2026 edition runs from Saturday, July 25 to Monday, July 27, 2026.
The festival days are strictly defined: On Saturday, the Kirmes begins at 3:00 PM and runs until 2:45 AM into the early Sunday morning. On Sunday, Kirmes operations start at 11:00 AM and again run until 2:45 AM. On Monday, the Kirmes opens as early as 10:30 AM and also ends in the early hours of Tuesday. The long opening hours make the Ascheberg festival grounds the center of a region that's half awake.
The showmen who come to Ascheberg annually bring a diverse program: large carousels, smaller family rides, dodgem cars, haunted houses, shooting galleries, and classic food stalls. The town center transforms into a single festival ground — the town closes surrounding streets and sets up a security corridor around the festival area.
The Jacobi-Kirmes is named after St. James' Day (July 25), the patronal feast of the Ascheberg church. As early as the Middle Ages, the St. James' pilgrimage attracted believers from the surrounding area — the market in front of the church square was originally a sacred, then a commercial event, and finally a purely folk festival event. This thousand-year-old tradition gives the Kirmes a different weight than pure showman markets elsewhere.
Ascheberg is a municipality in the Coesfeld district in NRW with around 16,000 inhabitants, located in the western Münsterland between Münster and Lüdinghausen. The Münsterland is characterized by pilgrimage sites, traditional village fairs (Kirmes), and a strong club life — the Jacobi-Kirmes Ascheberg is the highlight of this culture and attracts many times its own population over its three days.
The Jacobi-Kirmes 2026 once again mobilizes showmen and visitors from all over the western Münsterland to Ascheberg. The town center becomes a festival ground with large carousels, dodgem cars, family rides, shooting galleries, and classic bratwurst atmosphere. Long opening hours into the night — a Münsterland folk festival classic.
The Kirmes dates back to St. James' Day (July 25) as the patronal feast of the parish. What began as a pilgrimage in the Middle Ages has developed over the centuries into the most important village folk festival in the region.
Free admission. Costs only at rides, food stalls, and showman booths at usual market prices.
