Ascheberg's largest Schützenfest on the Ascension weekend — Bürgerschützenverein since 1679
The Bürgerschützenverein 1679 Ascheberg is one of Westphalia's oldest shooting clubs. As the club's name suggests, its tradition dates back to 1679 — shortly after the Thirty Years' War, when shooting fraternities were founded in many Westphalian villages to defend the village community. Today, in 2026, the annual Schützenfest is in its 347th year of tradition — and it is by far the largest Schützenfest in Ascheberg, a municipality in the Münsterland region between Münster and Hamm.
The Schützenfest traditionally falls on the Ascension weekend — in 2026, this means Thursday, May 14th (Ascension Day) to Sunday, May 17th. Four days of events with classic Westphalian Schützenfest choreography:
Frühschoppen atmosphere from the morning, opening program in the afternoon. Festival tent open, first live music in the evening. A typical Westphalian Father's Day start with bratwurst, beer, and Schützen cocktails.
Dress rehearsal for the shooters, program items for active members, dance evening for the sisterhood.
Highlight of the festival week: the King's Ball. Grand ball evening in the festival tent with dance music, the King and Queen as the focus, honored guests, sisterhood. Those attending the King's Ball for the first time will experience a very different side of Westphalia — formal attire, traditional dances, live dance band.
In the morning, the Schützenfest High Mass at the parish church. In the afternoon, the bird shooting — the election of the new Schützenkönig through a traditional shooting competition. Coronation of the King in the evening with a grand festive gathering. The new King and his Queen begin a season full of representative duties.
The Schützenfest takes place on Schlingermanns Weide — a large meadow on the outskirts of Ascheberg, which has served as the festival grounds for the Bürgerschützen for years. A large festival tent for several hundred guests will be set up, along with outdoor areas with children's carousels, food stalls, and the bird pole for the shooting competition.
The club's motto, 'Liebe und Eintracht sind die Zierde unserer Gesellschaft' (Love and Harmony are the Ornament of our Society), encapsulates the DNA of such clubs: it's not primarily about shooting, but about the community life of an entire village. Joining the club means taking responsibility for a tradition that supports the social fabric of the village. The Schützenfest is the annual self-affirmation of this community.
The Bürgerschützenfest is not a tourist event, but a village club festival. Visitors from outside are welcome, but should be aware: the central events (King's Ball, King's Coronation) are ambitiously formal. Those who come for the festival tent bustle and food stalls will experience classic Westphalian Volksfest atmosphere. An educational insight into the rural club culture of Westphalia.
