The Schwartzsche Villa – A Cultural Centre in a Steglitz Gründerzeit Villa
The Schwartzsche Villa at Grunewaldstraße 55 in Berlin-Steglitz is a Gründerzeit building constructed in 1898 with a neoclassical appearance, which has been used as a district cultural centre since 1992. Readings, concerts, exhibitions, and theatre performances take place here throughout the year – and on one Advent weekend, the garden also opens to the public.
Three Days of Family Advent in the Garden
The family Christmas market in the garden of the Schwartzschen Villa is organized from December 5th to 7th, 2026, daily from 12 PM to 8 PM. The concept is deliberately family-friendly and small-scale:
- around 15 to 20 stalls with Berlin arts and crafts, handmade gifts, ceramics, jewellery, and woollen goods
- culinary classics: homemade bratwurst, kale, waffles, mulled wine, children's punch
- performances by regional choirs on a small outdoor stage
- craft activities for children inside the Villa
- photo opportunity with Santa Claus during the pre-Christmas season
Admission is free. The cosy atmosphere of the garden – framed by old trees, decorated with fairy lights – makes the market a popular family destination in southwest Berlin.
Steglitz and the Steglitz-Zehlendorf District
The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, with its villa neighbourhoods, extensive green spaces, the Botanical Garden, and lakeside areas (Krumme Lanke, Schlachtensee, Wannsee), is one of Berlin's affluent residential areas. Steglitz forms the northern part of the district and, with Schloßstraße, the Filiale shopping mile, and the Schwartzsche Villa, has both an urban and a residential character. The family Christmas market has been a firm fixture of the district's pre-Christmas culture here for years.
