Britzer Garten — Berlin's Green South
Britzer Garten on Buckower Damm in the Neukölln district is one of Berlin's most beautiful parks. Laid out for the 1985 Federal Garden Exhibition, the park covers around 90 hectares and offers expansive lawns, a large lake, themed gardens, and a popular playground. In spring, the park is particularly in focus for one thing: the Rhododendron Grove in full bloom.
The Rhododendron Grove as a Stage
In mid-May, thousands of rhododendrons and azaleas bloom in vibrant shades of pink, purple, and white in Britzer Garten. This floral splendor serves as the natural backdrop for the Fairy Festival. Especially in the Rhododendron Grove, the atmosphere of an enchanted forest unfolds — perfect for a family festival with a fairytale touch.
Fairies, Elves, and Unicorns
The festival thrives on its staging. Several performers in elaborate costumes populate the park as fairies, elves, and other mythical creatures. They wander through the Rhododendron Grove, pose for photos, and playfully engage with children. The highlight for the little ones: unicorn rides, where decorated ponies carry children through the park. The festival is also an occasion for adults — many visitors come in costume themselves or wear flower crowns.
Atmosphere and Audience
The Fairy Festival is not a mass event but a deliberately accessible family celebration. It primarily targets families with children aged 3 to 12, as well as fans of the fantasy and cosplay scene and Berlin park visitors looking for a blooming May Sunday in nature. Picnic blankets and cameras are explicitly welcome.
Neukölln District, Britz Neighborhood
Britzer Garten is located in the Britz neighborhood in the south of the Neukölln district, in close proximity to the historic Hufeisensiedlung (UNESCO World Heritage) and Britz Castle. Despite its size, the garden is less known than the Tiergarten or Hasenheide — which gives it a quiet, almost village-like charm. The Fairy Festival fits perfectly into this profile: a local, charming festival beyond the usual big Berlin festival routine.
