Magical Light and Performance Open-Air in Britzer Garten, Neukölln
The Britzer Garten, at 90 hectares, is one of Berlin's largest and most beautiful parks — an area opened in 1985 for the Federal Garden Exhibition and has since served as the green lung of southern Berlin. Located in the Britz district of Neukölln, it combines expansive meadows, a Karl Foerster garden, a rhododendron grove, a large lake, and a café — and is equally popular as an excursion destination for families, sports enthusiasts, and those seeking relaxation. It is managed by the state-owned Grün Berlin GmbH.
Once every summer, the garden opens its gates for a special night event: the Britzer Gartennacht. Over 100 artists — acrobats, fire artists, walking acts, dancers, musicians — perform on meadows, clearings, paths, and stages. Light installations and atmospheric lighting transform the familiar garden into a fairy tale park. The mix of theater, performance, music, and light art makes the event one of the most spectacular open-air events of the Berlin summer season.
The 2026 edition structures the grounds into four thematic worlds in the four cardinal directions: Dwarf Land, Elf Valley, Dragon's Nest, and a Storytelling Tent. Each world has its own visual language, its own artists, and its own soundscape. Those walking through the park will traverse four distinctly different aesthetics — an hour in Dwarf Land, one in Dragon's Nest, one in the Storytelling Tent — and can create their own evening rhythm.
The district of Neukölln is often identified with the multicultural north (Hermannplatz, Sonnenallee, Reuterkiez) — but the southern part around Britz, Buckow, and Rudow is just as important: extensive green spaces, the Britzer Garten, the Hufeisensiedlung (Horseshoe Estate) as a UNESCO World Heritage site, old villages with farms and stables. The Britzer Gartennacht is one of the most important events in southern Neukölln, attracting thousands of visitors from all over Berlin and Brandenburg each year.
On August 8, 2026, Britzer Garten opens its gates from 4 PM for the summer open-air night of the year. The program begins at 5 PM — and the familiar park transforms into a fairy tale park: Over 100 artists will perform on meadows and clearings, from acrobats and fire artists to walking acts and musicians. Four thematic worlds in the cardinal directions — Dwarf Land, Elf Valley, Dragon's Nest, and Storytelling Tent — give the evening structure and visual diversity. Light installations, soundscapes, and surprising encounters with performers will make the park shine late into the night.
