Palatinate Kirchweih on the schoolyard of the Berg elementary school in southern Palatinate
The Kerwe in Berg is the annual Palatinate Kirchweih of the small community on the Bienwald. With just under 1500 inhabitants, Berg is a manageable village community that organizes its Kerwe independently. The schoolyard of the elementary school offers a spacious, sheltered festival site with good infrastructure and has been the established Kerwe grounds for years.
The organizer is the Music and Carnival Club Berg, a locally active club with a dual focus on music and carnival. This dual role also shapes the Kerwe: Musical contributions from the club, brass music, and a high proportion of volunteer festival helpers give the Kerwe its character. Other Berg clubs – the sports club, fire department, choir, and boat club – also contribute to the festival stalls.
The Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate custom structure: barrel tapping on the opening evening, Kerwerede by the Kerweparrer (a local representative who comments on the past year's events in rhyme), Kerwetanz in the festival tent, Frühschoppen on Sunday, and the Kerwe winding down on Tuesday evening. The Palatinate Kerwe is more than a folk festival – it is an identity ritual for every community.
Berg is located between Hagenbach and Wörth am Rhein on the western edge of the large Bienwald forest. The proximity to the Alsatian border shapes the cultural life of the place; many festival visitors come from the neighboring Alsatian communities. The Kerwe, along with the Kichbergfest and the boat festival on the Rhine, is one of the central festival dates in Berg's annual calendar.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: opening on Saturday evening, family program and Kerwetanz, Frühschoppen on Sunday, Kerwe winding down on Monday or Tuesday evening.
