Biannual Vogtland town festival with Après-Ski opener — July 31 to August 2, 2026 on Auerbach's Altmarkt
Auerbach/Vogtl. — the "Bergstadt" (mining town) in Saxony's Vogtland region, located between Plauen and Zwickau, with around 18,000 inhabitants — celebrates its Altmarktfest every two years. 2026 is another Auerbach festival year: From Friday, July 31, to Sunday, August 2, 2026, the historic Altmarkt, with its town hall and Auerbach Castle, will be transformed into a vibrant festival mile. The organizer is the WIA Stadtmarketing association "Wir in Auerbach," supported by numerous Auerbach clubs and sponsors.
The festival begins unusually on Friday evening: with an Après-Ski party on Amtsstraße as the "opener" for the town festival. This tongue-in-cheek nod to alpine ski hut culture (with hits, Tyrolean hats, and mulled wine even in midsummer) is an Auerbach tradition and is considered one of the liveliest festival openings in the Vogtland. DJs, cover bands, and live acts set the tone for the following two festival days.
On Saturday and Sunday, the actual town festival opens with several stages on the Altmarkt and in the adjacent streets. The musical spectrum ranges from Schlager and folk music to rock and pop cover bands, cabaret, and comedy. Auerbach clubs — from sports clubs and the fire brigade to cultural heritage associations — present themselves along the "Vereinsmeile" (club mile). For the little ones, there is a play and craft street with a carousel, bouncy castle, and hands-on activities. Restaurateurs from Auerbach and the surrounding area provide food and drinks.
Auerbach is located in the western foothills of the Ore Mountains in Saxony's Vogtland region, on the edge of the Pöhl Dam. The "Bergstadt" originated from a mining settlement and is now part of the Vogtland district. Visitors to the Altmarktfest should plan half a day for Auerbach Castle (now a museum), the castle tower with views over the "Bergstadt," and the nearby Pöhl Dam. The A 72 motorway (Hof–Chemnitz) provides good connections from Auerbach to Plauen, Zwickau, Hof, and Chemnitz.
The biannual Auerbach Altmarktfest takes place in 2026 from July 31 (Après-Ski opener) to August 2. Organizer consortium: WIA Stadtmarketing "Wir in Auerbach" with numerous Auerbach clubs and sponsors.
The traditional Après-Ski opening on Friday, the diverse stage program on Saturday and Sunday, the club mile, and the play street for families are the hallmarks of the festival.
