About EFM Berlinale

The European Film Market (EFM) is the international film market of the Berlinale – the parallel industry trade fair where international film rights are traded, co-productions are negotiated, and innovation in Animation, XR, and Games-Film is connected. In 2026, the EFM runs from February 12th to 18th with over 12,500 registered professionals – a 5% increase compared to the previous year. New additions include the EFM Animation Days (Feb 12–14), the innovation platform EFM Beyond at the Gropius Bau, and the Berlinale Film School Summit with 100 film students.

The Berlinale's Parallel Industry Engine

While the Berlinale celebrates its stars on the red carpet, an equally important event runs in the background: the European Film Market (EFM). This is where distributors, sales agents, festival curators, streamers, and investors buy, sell, co-produce, and finance the films of the coming twelve months. In 2026, the event is bigger than ever with over 12,500 registered industry professionals – a 5% growth compared to 2025.

New Initiatives for 2026

The EFM 2026 introduces several new program lines. The EFM Animation Days (February 12–14) is a new format specifically for animation professionals – featuring showcases, pitches, and workshops, supported by MDM Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung. EFM Beyond is a new innovation platform at the Gropius Bau on Niederkirchnerstraße, bringing together film, animation, games, and XR in one place – with upskilling workshops and a cross-IP accelerator. The Berlinale Film School Summit brings 100 selected film students to the heart of the industry, giving them exclusive access to industry activities and masterclasses.

Established Programs Remain Anchors

Alongside these, established programs continue: the EFM Startups Programme (12th edition) showcases ten media-tech startups; the Investors Forum fosters dialogue between finance and film production; EFM Far East in Progress is a new WIP section in partnership with Asian festivals; EFM Frontières Focus bundles five innovative genre projects; the Berlinale Series Market, with its new «Series Match» format, drives the series business forward; DocSalon and Archive Market (Feb 13–17) covers the documentary sector; the conference program runs from February 13th to 16th.

Country Focus: Morocco

Each year, the EFM highlights a Country Focus. In 2026, it's Morocco – the North African country with a growing film industry, its own festivals (Marrakesh International Film Festival), and strategic importance as a filming location for international productions. The Moroccan delegation will organize its own program points: pitches of Moroccan productions, networking events, and showcases of the country's film funding. The EFM is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA, regional film funds, and national partners such as the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

EFM Berlinale — edition 2026

The European Film Market 2026 runs from February 12th to 18th, parallel to the Berlinale. Over 12,500 registered industry professionals (+5% compared to 2025). New program lines: EFM Animation Days (Feb 12–14), EFM Beyond at Gropius Bau, Berlinale Film School Summit with 100 students, EFM Far East in Progress WIP, EFM Frontières Focus. Country Focus 2026: Morocco. Accreditation required.

The 2026 EFM is a comprehensively modernized edition. The EFM Animation Days at the beginning of the week acknowledge that animation has become a central growth segment in the streamer economy. EFM Beyond at the Gropius Bau brings together film, animation, games, and XR for the first time – a conceptual step reflecting the increasing convergence of these industries. The Berlinale Film School Summit opens the market to the next generation of filmmakers.

Country Focus Morocco responds to the growing visibility of North African film production in recent years – Morocco is both a filming location for international productions and home to its own young industry. The traditional core EFM program (film rights market, sales tables, Investors Forum) runs parallel to the new formats.
