Self-organized, non-commercial street festival in Erlangen — three days of live music for social and political projects
The Erlanger Bismarckstraßenfest is not just any neighborhood festival. It is self-organized and non-commercial: the bands play without pay, all helpers volunteer, and the proceeds go to social and political projects. For 35 years, the southern part of Bismarckstraße in Erlangen has transformed once a year into an open stage and a meeting point for a diverse audience.
Over three days, around 20 bands perform — a deliberately broad spectrum from Swing and Blues Rock to Punk, Flamenco, Klezmer, and Ska. Choirs, singer-songwriters, and dance groups complement the program. The mix of music, commitment, and neighborly atmosphere creates the festival's special character.
The Bismarckstraßenfest is financed through donations and catering; any remaining funds are passed on to non-profit, social, and political initiatives. This fundamentally distinguishes it from commercial city festivals — it sees itself as a contribution to a solidarity-based urban society.
Erlangen is known as a university and festival city (Bergkirchweih, Poetenfest, Comic-Salon). The Bismarckstraßenfest adds an alternative, grassroots democratic accent to this cultural calendar. Bismarckstraße is centrally located, within walking distance of Erlangen's city center.
