Sunday Matinees in a Baroque Garden — Erlangen's Free Summer Concert Series Since 1978
For nearly five decades, the Erlanger Schlossgartenkonzerte have been a staple of the Franconian summer cultural calendar. Four free matinees between May and August turn the Palace Garden in front of the Orangery into a concert stage — families sit on blankets, students on benches, seniors in lounge chairs, all listening together. This socially inclusive format is precisely its trademark.
In 2026, the program spans from the spirit of Anatevka to medieval court music. Four concerts, four very different worlds: new folk music from Bavaria with the Ensemble Maxjoseph, Brazilian jazz with Yara Linss and João Luís, sharp-witted children's theater chanson with Suli Puschban and the Kapelle der guten Hoffnung, and finally, medieval sounds by the Capella Antiqua Bambergensis.
Usually, the season comprises eight Sunday concerts. In 2026, there will only be four — a concession to the budget constraints of the City of Erlangen. Organizers emphasize that the quality and free nature of the series will be maintained; individual concerts will be programmed more densely and carefully selected as a result.
The venue is the lawn directly in front of the baroque Orangery in Erlangen's Palace Garden — a late 17th-century ensemble commissioned by Margrave Christian Ernst of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. In case of rain, the series moves to the nearby Redoutensaal on Theaterplatz. The weather hotline 09131/86-1417 provides information from 9 AM on the concert day.
The Cultural Office of the City of Erlangen organizes the series, with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität and the E-Werk Kulturzentrum as partners. The main sponsor since 2009 is Sparda-Bank Nürnberg, whose long-term support makes the free admission possible. In times of tight cultural budgets, the combination of municipal sponsorship, university partnership, and bank funding is a proven model.
Due to budgetary reasons, the City of Erlangen is reducing the series to four concerts in 2026, instead of the usual eight. Programmatic care becomes even more important: each of the four matinees will be an independent highlight.
The spectrum ranges from Bavarian folk music in a new guise to the historically informed practice of medieval courts — a series that kindly but firmly expands the listening habits of its audience.
Ensemble Maxjoseph: »Das Leichte ist am schwersten« (The Lightest is the Hardest) — New Folk Music from Bavaria. Four musicians around violinist Maximilian Kreuzeder play with tradition without destroying it.
Yara Linss (Vocals) and João Luís (Guitar): »Perambular« — Fine Brazilian Jazz. Bossa nova and Samba from the source.
Suli Puschban and the Kapelle der guten Hoffnung: »Ich hab' die Schnauze voll von rosa!« (I'm Fed Up with Pink!) — Cleverly cheeky children's and family program with songs that challenge adults too.
Capella Antiqua Bambergensis: »Music for Emperors and Kings« — Medieval music on historical instruments, performed by one of Franconia's most renowned ensembles for historical performance practice.
All concerts are held outdoors in the Palace Garden; in case of rain, they move to the Redoutensaal (Theaterplatz 1). Weather hotline: 09131/86-1417.
Admission to all four concerts is free. No reservations, no registration. Support from Sparda-Bank Nürnberg has made it possible to forgo tickets since 2009.
Erlangen Main Station is well-connected by the Nuremberg-Bamberg S-Bahn line. It's a 10-minute walk from the station to the Palace Garden. By car, parking is available in the Theater, Großparkplatz, or Altstadtmarkt underground garages.
All concerts on Sundays from 11 AM to 12 PM.
Free. No registration, no seat reservation.
Relocation to the Redoutensaal (Theaterplatz 1). Hotline: 09131/86-1417 from 9 AM on the concert Sunday.
