Running for a good cause in Röthelheimpark
The Erlangen Charity Run is organized by three Erlangen Lions Clubs (Lions Club Erlangen, Lions Club Erlangen-Hugenottenstadt, and Lions Club Erlangen-Orangerie) together with the Leo Club Erlangen-'Markgraf'. Since its premiere in 2013, the venue has been Röthelheimpark – a green oasis in southern Erlangen, where the university and research district of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität borders the residential areas.
The course is a 900-meter circuit around the green strip – mostly flat, with asphalt and gravel sections. Those who run collect laps for a good cause: each completed lap is converted into donations through sponsors. Directly at the finish line is a meadow where the neighborhood festival takes place – with live music, catering, and family activities. In Middle Franconia's Erlangen, a district-free city in the state of Bavaria (09562), the Charity Run has long been a fixture on the event calendar.
For years, the donations raised have gone to the Leo-Lions Sportkids at Pestalozzi School Erlangen (Integration through Sport) and the foundation Children for a Better World e.V. Over the years, considerable sums have been raised, flowing into concrete projects for children locally and worldwide – the charity aspect is the focus.
In 2025, over 1,400 runners came to Röthelheimpark, completed countless laps, and thus ensured a donation sum in the five-figure euro range. Main sponsors such as SMDM, naturafit, Meilwald Apotheke, Kieser, Sparkasse Erlangen, and VR Bank support the event every year.
On Saturday, May 9, 2026, runners of all ages will gather in Röthelheimpark from 11:45 AM to 4:00 PM for the 13th Erlangen Charity Run. The 900-meter circuit is mostly flat, with asphalt and gravel sections – suitable for toddlers as well as ambitious adults.
