NRW State Cultural Festival for Almost 50 Years
The Duisburger Akzente is one of Germany's most important urban cultural festivals. Founded in 1977 as a municipal initiative, it was officially declared the Cultural Festival of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1995. The 47th edition will take place in 2026 — almost half a century of uninterrupted tradition. This makes the Akzente one of the oldest and most renowned urban festivals in NRW.
Motto 2026: 'Encounters — What Separates Us, What Connects Us'
The 2026 theme is both political and poetic: 'Encounters — what separates us, what connects us'. It directly references the writer Audre Lorde with the quote: 'It is our failure to recognize, accept, and celebrate our differences that divides us.' The Akzente thus positions itself as a platform for social self-reflection in a fragmented present.
When: February 27 – March 22, 2026
Four weeks of festival. Opening on Friday, February 27, 2026 — Closing on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
Where: 40 Venues Across the City
Instead of a central festival stage, the Akzente utilize 40 venues in Duisburg — theaters, concert halls, museums, galleries, churches, and unusual locations. This city-wide expansion is conceptual: the Akzente 'accentuate' the entire city, making it the stage.
Over 90 Events — The Program Pillars
Theater
The opening on February 27 will be presented by the Berliner Ensemble with a Brecht adaptation. Further theater productions like 'Fremder als Mond' address themes of migration and identity.
Music
Highlight: Milli sings 'The Legend of Monk' — a jazz homage to Thelonious Monk. Also classical concerts and experimental formats.
Literature
With Bachmann Prize winner Saša Stanišić, one of the most important voices in German-language migration literature comes to Duisburg.
Dance and Performance
Dance installations, performances, and choreographic works complement the theater program.
Visual Arts
Exhibitions in museums and galleries are integrated into the festival program.
Film
Film screenings in cinemas and unusual locations, often with film discussions.
Audre Lorde as the Inspirer
The African-American author and activist Audre Lorde (1934–1992) is the intellectual patron of the 2026 festival with her writings on difference, identity, and encounters. Her work on diversity as a strength rather than a threat fits the cityscape of Duisburg — a Ruhr area city shaped by migration, industry, and cultural plurality.
Duisburg — The City of Encounters
With over 500,000 inhabitants, Duisburg is NRW's fifth-largest city. The city has a strong migration history since the 1960s (Turkish, Polish, Italian, Yugoslav, Lebanese, and more communities), Europe's largest inland port, and is a symbol of structural change after the end of coal and steel. Encounter here is not an abstract theme but everyday reality. The Akzente take this seriously.
Who is Behind It?
The organizers are Kulturbetriebe Duisburg — the municipal cultural institution. Main sponsors are the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (which declared the Akzente a state festival in 1995) and Sparkasse Duisburg.
