Charming village festival in the Ostertal with premium hiking trails
Steinbach is located in the Ostertal, a rural valley on the eastern edge of Saarland that is often overlooked by tourists — and that's precisely what makes it so charming. Gentle hills, clear streams, dense beech forests, and well-kept farm villages characterize the landscape. Steinbach itself, with around 1,200 inhabitants, is one of the larger villages and a district of Ottweiler. The annual village festival is jointly supported by numerous local clubs — the sports club, fire department, music association, heritage society, and rural women's association.
The format is refreshingly unusual: not a classic funfair with showmen, but a village festival with thematic focuses — live bands, guided hikes on the Steinbachpfad (one of Saarland's premium hiking trails), bike tours, and culinary specialties. The festival atmosphere is familiar and relaxed, with a mixed audience of villagers, hikers, cyclists, and music fans from Saarbrücken and Trier.
What sets the Dorffest Steinbach apart from many comparable festivals is its ambitious music selection. In 2025, the Bixi Chicks (an energetic pop formation) and the Bruise Brassers (a nine-piece brass formation with a funk, soul, and pop repertoire) performed. The music association ensemble of the Musikverein Steinberg-Deckenhardt provided the traditional Sunday morning 'Frühschoppen' — the association celebrated its 95th anniversary in 2025.
The culinary diversity is remarkable: locally famous Staanbacher Waffeln (a family recipe from the village), Alsatian Flammkuchen, freshly grilled fish from the nearby Ostertal river, homemade cakes by the rural women. Several Saarland wineries participate as partners — wineries from Perl and the nearby Bliesgau region.
A special feature is the free night bus: on both nights (Friday and Saturday), shuttle buses run to Ottweiler and Fürth at 0:30 and 1:30 AM. This makes the festival attractive for younger visitors who don't have a car or want to celebrate responsibly.
Program details for 2026 will be published in spring 2026 on dorffest-steinbach.de and in the official gazette of the town of Ottweiler. The format follows the proven three-day pattern.
