Four Franconian village Kirchweihen in one municipality on the Romantic Road
The municipality of Ohrenbach in the western Ansbach district is one of the few Franconian communities where four independent Kirchweihen are celebrated annually — in the districts of Habelsee, Ohrenbach (main town), Reichardsroth, and Oberscheckenbach. Each of these Kirchweihen follows the classic pattern of the West Middle Franconian village Kirchweih: festive church service, raising of the Kärwabaum (fair tree), Kerwabuam and Kerwamadla (fair lads and lasses) in Franconian costume, festival tent evenings, and the traditional closing on Monday with "Kärwa-Begraben" (fair burial). The municipality of Ohrenbach is located in the state of Bavaria and is part of the Romantic Road, in close proximity to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Mayor Johannes Hellenschmidt emphasizes the value of tradition in the local press: the Kerwa serves to "remember the origins" — a statement that points to the close connection between village identity, the church community, and club life. In the four districts, the local clubs (boys' and girls' associations, sports clubs, parishes) organize the Kerwa in close coordination with the municipal administration. The Oberscheckenbach Kerwa 2025 took place from November 7th to 10th, thus concluding the Kerwa season of the year — a good indication for the 2026 Kerwa date (early November).
The four Kerwa dates in Ohrenbach are traditionally spread throughout the year: the Kirchweih of the main town Ohrenbach traditionally falls on a summer or early autumn date, as do Habelsee and Reichardsroth. Oberscheckenbach celebrates in November as the season finale. Exact dates for 2026 will be communicated by the municipal administration during the year; they always follow the classic four-day schedule from Friday to Monday. Characteristic is the intimate atmosphere of these small village Kirchweihen — a few hundred inhabitants per district ensure a familiar Kerwa experience.
The municipality of Ohrenbach comprises six villages (Ohrenbach, Reichardsroth, Habelsee, Gumpelshofen, Gailshofen, Oberscheckenbach) and is located about 8 kilometers from Rothenburg ob der Tauber — on the edge of the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park and in the picturesque Tauber Valley. The municipality sees itself as "tradition-conscious, nature-connected, future-oriented" and, with its dense Kerwa calendar, preserves a rare custom heritage in Middle Franconia. The region is an attractive excursion destination from medieval Rothenburg due to its proximity to the Romantic Road.
The four Kerwa dates for the municipality of Ohrenbach in 2026, as every year, are spread across the Kerwa season — from early summer to November. The season traditionally concludes with the Oberscheckenbach Kirchweih (2025: November 7th–10th, 2025), which is also expected to take place on the first or second weekend of November in 2026. Each Kerwa follows the classic four-day schedule from Friday to Monday, with a festive church service, raising of the Kärwabaum, procession of the Kerwabuam and Kerwamadla, festival tent evenings, and "Kärwa-Begraben" on Monday.
The Kerwa festivals are organized by the local boys' and girls' associations, sports clubs, and the parish, in cooperation with the Ohrenbach municipal administration. The exact scheduling of each district's Kerwa will be communicated locally via notices, the community newsletter, and the Ohrenbach municipality's website.
