Biennial herb festival on Nageler See in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park with herbalists, boat trips, and children's program
The municipality of Nagel in the Wunsiedel district of Fichtelgebirge officially holds the title 'Herb Village' – awarded for its intensively cultivated tradition of wild herb knowledge, show gardens, and certified herbal educators who offer walks and courses here. The Nagler Kräuterfest combines this expertise every two years into a joyful, nature-oriented festival day on Nageler See.
The festival takes place every two years in even-numbered years – always on the first Sunday in July. The 6th edition was held in 2024, the 7th is scheduled for July 5, 2026, each from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In odd-numbered years (2023, 2025), activities focus on wild herb walks, workshops, and the year-round show garden.
On the festival meadow around the lake, exhibitors will be offering between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.:
A special attraction is the Herberia group – performers in historical costumes who convey old herbal knowledge, medieval healing arts, and monastic medicine. For the children, there are craft stations, herb workshops, a water-treading basin, and hands-on games.
Throughout the day, certified herbal educators (including Monika Wastl and Erika Bauer) will lead short wild herb walks around Nageler See. Boat trips will take place on the lake – a quiet, contemplative experience against the backdrop of the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park. A raffle financially rounds off the program; the proceeds benefit the Nature and Herb Village Association.
A Nagel tradition: The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. with a celebratory service in the Scent and Butterfly Garden right by the lake. The spiritual component represents the close connection between experiencing nature, folk beliefs, and herbal knowledge, as has been cultivated in Upper Franconian monasteries for centuries.
Nageler See is one of the quietest lakes in the Fichtelgebirge – a moor lake amidst protected meadows, with conservation areas for beavers and rare plants. It is centrally located in the herb village, which has developed a tourist profile with show gardens, butterfly gardens, herb trails, and the House of Herbs (Kemnather Strasse 3), focusing on Slow Tourism and traditional enjoyment. Nagel is one of Bavaria's enjoyment destinations and a stop on the Franconian Mountain Trail.
The 7th edition of the biennial festival will take place on July 5, 2026, on Nageler See. The organizer is the Nature and Herb Village Association Nagel e.V.
