Traditional club and village festival of the oldest gymnastics club in the Iserlohn district of Griesenbrauck
Griesenbrauck is a small district within the Iserlohn district of Sümmern, in the Märkischer Kreis region of North Rhine-Westphalia. It's home to a closely-knit village community organized around its clubs — chief among them the Turnverein TV Griesenbrauck 1887, which has shaped the sporting and social life in the village for nearly 140 years.
The village festival takes place around the clubhouse on Griesenbraucker Straße. It's a celebration without a big stage and without an admission fee — more like an extended club evening, to which neighbors not affiliated with the club are explicitly invited. Sausages from the grill, cake, drinks from the club's funds, and small activities for children in the afternoon. The festival spans generations: former gymnasts reminiscing about competitions in the 1960s sit alongside families whose children are just starting parent-child gymnastics.
Sümmern was incorporated into the city of Iserlohn in 1975 and, with over 6,000 inhabitants, is now one of the larger districts of Iserlohn. The Märkischer Kreis in the southern Sauerland is one of the regions with the most clubs in Germany — shooting clubs, gymnastics clubs, and heritage clubs shape the villages, and festivals like the Griesenbrauck village festival are the social glue that keeps these structures alive.
Anyone wanting to experience the Sauerland and its club landscape authentically will find themselves at home at the Griesenbrauck village festival. There's no elaborate show program or tourists here — instead, an event that demonstrates how a village club lives its tradition in the 21st century: modestly, voluntarily, with genuine commitment.
In 2026, the village festival opens on May 30 at the TV Griesenbrauck clubhouse. The Sümmern event calendar indicates an official start between 1 PM and 3 PM; the festival will then continue in the club's tradition — with a grill, cake table, drinks, and relaxed socializing.
There will be small activities for children, and often musical accompaniment in the late afternoon. Those who want to get to know Sümmern and the club culture of the Sauerland will be well looked after at the Griesenbrauck village festival.
