Traditional village summer festival of the I. Kompanie of the Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastian 1842 Sümmern at the Ostermann Farm
When Sümmern in southwestern Westphalia enters high summer, the I. Kompanie of the Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastian 1842 e.V. celebrates its most important club festival of the year: the Tennenfest. In 2026, it will take place on Saturday, June 27, from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM at the Ostermann Farm at Schedaer Weg 25, in the Sümmern district of Iserlohn.
The history of the Tennenfest is a timeless anecdote about the power of the unexpected. In 1977, the I. Kompanie wanted to host a small club festival in the barn (threshing barn) at the farm of Theodor Ostermann — as usual, modestly planned with a simple substructure. But: "Significantly more visitors than expected wanted to celebrate the Tennenfest”. The unexpected enthusiasm turned the one-man farm format into an annual major undertaking, which remains the company's event highlight to this day — almost five decades of unbroken tradition.
With over 220 members and 29 officers, the I. Kompanie is one of the strongest companies within the Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastian 1842 Sümmern. A large part of the membership growth is due to the construction development around the Feldmarkring — modern residential areas brought new families to the district, many of whom became involved in the company. This keeps club life active: Tennenfest, Schützenfest, Schnadegang (annual family hike in September), and officer excursions to major regional shooting festivals are part of the club year.
The Ostermann Farm at Schedaer Weg 25 has been the permanent address of the Tennenfest since 1977. The Tenne (traditionally a paved room in the farmhouse where grain was threshed) has now been converted into a festival barn with standing tables, a bar, and lighting — an atmosphere between farm authenticity and club festival routine.
With about 7,700 inhabitants, Sümmern is one of the districts of Iserlohn (Märkischer Kreis) in southwestern Westphalia. The place has a village character, shaped by active club life — in addition to the Schützenbruderschaft, there are other clubs. Anyone who wants to experience real Sauerland-Westphalian village and shooting festival life is in the right place here — not a tourist format, but authentic club culture.
Since 1977, the Tennenfest has undergone many structural expansions to accommodate the growing audience — expansions that have grown almost imperceptibly over the decades. What began in 1977 is today a firm Sümmern tradition, which the entire Schützenbruderschaft relies on. A story of unexpected success that has become a classic through constant care.
Four hours of summer beer garden and club festival in one of Westphalia's oldest barn traditions. The Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastian 1842, with its strong I. Kompanie, has maintained this format since 1977, making it an eagerly awaited annual highlight for the entire Sümmern village community.
