Upper Franconian Kirchweih tradition in the Hof district
The Döhlauer Kärwa is the traditional Kirchweih of the municipality of Döhlau in Upper Franconia's Hof district. It follows a weekend rhythm that has remained unchanged for generations: Kärwa Party on Saturday, coffee and cake on Sunday, and the convivial Kärwa meal on Monday. This three-day structure connects younger and older generations and preserves an authentic Upper Franconian festival culture.
The main organizer is the ASGV Döhlau (General Sports and Singing Association), one of the oldest clubs in the municipality. Over the decades, the club has made the Kärwa a firm community event, taking care of the program, catering, music, and festival atmosphere. Active club members and helpers ensure that hundreds of guests from Döhlau, Hof, and the Vogtland region come together every year.
Saturday evening belongs to the younger generation: the Kärwa Party brings live music or DJ sets to the festival tent, with beer on tap and a lively atmosphere until late at night. On Sunday afternoon, the family takes over the tent: coffee and homemade cakes are the heart of this quieter festival day, where grandparents, parents, and children come together. Monday evening finally brings together club members and regular guests for the classic Kärwa meal – traditional Upper Franconian dishes, often with Schäuferla (pork shoulder), dumplings, and sauerkraut.
The municipality of Döhlau is located northeast of the city of Hof in the extreme northeast of Bavaria, directly on the border with Saxony and Thuringia. With around 3,000 inhabitants, Döhlau is a typical Upper Franconian rural municipality with active club life. Its location between the Frankenwald, Vogtland, and Fichtelgebirge makes Döhlau a place with a mixed identity – Franconian, with Saxon influences, but unmistakably Upper Franconian.
The Kärwa is more than a festival – it is a social event that brings the town together. The younger generation celebrates on Saturday, families come on Sunday, and club members crown the weekend on Monday with the traditional meal. This clear structure makes the Döhlauer Kärwa an example of lived Upper Franconian festival tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Döhlauer Kärwa brings three festival days to the Upper Franconian town. The organizer ASGV Döhlau has clearly structured the individual festival days: Saturday for the younger generation, Sunday for families, Monday for club members and regular guests.
The Kärwa Party on Saturday starts in the evening with live music or DJ sets, beer on tap, and atmosphere until late at night. On Sunday afternoon, the festival tent opens for coffee and homemade cakes from the club's bakery. Monday evening concludes with the traditional Kärwa meal – Upper Franconian specialties in a convivial setting.
Admission to the Kärwa is free. Food and drinks are served by ASGV Döhlau at usual festival prices. For the Kärwa meal on Monday, prior reservation with ASGV Döhlau is recommended.
