Free beach festival on the East Beach — Education, games, and 1,000 blue NIVEA balls
The German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the NIVEA brand share a long-standing partnership for water safety, sun protection, and beach education. Every summer, the DLRG/NIVEA Beach Festival tours selected German North and Baltic Sea resorts — three hours of fun, three hours of education on each beach. Over 100 volunteer DLRG staff from all over Germany invest their vacation time for the tour.
Hörnum is located at the southern tip of the island of Sylt in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. While the northern Sylt towns (Westerland, Wenningstedt, List) shape the island's classic tourist reputation, Hörnum is deliberately smaller, quieter, and closer to nature — the Hörnum East Beach, with views of the Wadden Sea and the Halligen islands, is one of Sylt's most beautiful beaches away from the hustle and bustle.
The concept is deliberately accessible — children and families should have fun while taking away important knowledge. On the festival grounds at the East Beach, you'll find:
The visual highlight: up to 1,000 blue NIVEA beach balls are distributed to visitors during the festival. During the flash mob, they form a blue sea on the beach — the DLRG team leader gives the signal to throw all beach balls at once, creating a memorable image of the summer event. Participants get to keep their beach ball as a souvenir.
As with many DLRG activities: Free admission, no registration required. Families can come and go, participate or watch — as they please. The format is designed for children aged approximately 4 and up, but also benefits parents and grandparents who can gain knowledge for water safety emergencies in a relaxed atmosphere.
The 2026 edition in Hörnum on Sylt follows the established tour format: three compact hours during which the DLRG and NIVEA jointly offer a family program of games and knowledge transfer. The highlight is the joint flash mob, where the brought and distributed NIVEA beach balls briefly turn the beach into a blue sea.
Free admission. No registration required. Beach balls and souvenirs are distributed during the event.
Sylt is accessible via the Hindenburg Causeway railway from Niebüll or by DB Autozug car train. On Sylt, use the island bus, rental car, or bicycle to get to Hörnum (southern tip of the island). From the town center to Hörnum East Beach: approx. 5–10 minutes.
Free admission. No registration needed. Beach balls and souvenirs are distributed during the event.
3 hours from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Bring sun protection, water, and beachwear.
