Polo on the North Sea Sand
Beach polo differs from classic grass polo with a shortened field, softer balls, and teams of three. On the fine sand of Hörnum's east beach, play takes place on a marked field — right by the water, with the North Sea at your back. Four teams compete in several chukkers over two days; the winners receive the Julius Bär Cup.
Polo Club Sylt — Since 1998
The Polo Club Sylt was founded in 1998 and hosts two major tournaments on the island annually: the Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup at Pentecost and the Berenberg German Polo Masters at the end of July/beginning of August. Both tournaments have established polo as a sport on Sylt and are now firmly fixed dates in the Sylt event calendar.
Free Admission to the Outdoor Area
A special feature of Sylt Beach Polo: The outdoor area on the beach is freely accessible. Those who simply want to watch can take the Sylt bus to Hörnum, stand on the beach, and follow the spectacle without an entrance fee. Families can combine their beach day with the polo experience — a unique combination in Europe.
VIP Area and Pentecost Atmosphere
Those seeking the comfort of the VIP area will find covered grandstands with seats right at the edge of the field, exclusive catering, an apéro with the players, and access to the "POLO 1x1" format. This playful format invites spectators to take a shot at the goal themselves on the wooden horse "Madeira" — moderated by English referee Mark Holmes, with hotel accommodation vouchers as prizes.
Hörnum — Sylt's Southernmost Tip
Hörnum is located at the southern end of Sylt island, about 20 kilometers from Westerland. The small harbor community with its distinctive lighthouse forms the natural backdrop for the tournament. The combination of beach, harbor, polo field, and VIP grandstand makes the weekend a visually extraordinary event. The official supplier of the tournament is Blackforest-POLO.
