Schützenfest Grift (Wingst)

Tradition Since the 19th Century

The Schützenfest Grift has been celebrated for generations in the small Wingst district of Grift in the Cuxhaven district. The 128th edition in 2026 marks the unbroken connection of the population with their marksmen's club and Low German festival culture. In Lower Saxony, Schützenfeste are far more than just sporting competitions: they are the most important social event in the village calendar, where old acquaintances are maintained, new ones are made, and people dance, eat, and laugh together.

Festival Grounds and Atmosphere

During the festival days, the Grift festival grounds transform into a small funfair with carousels for the youngest visitors, food stalls, and a large catering area. The Wingst marksmen's family values a family-friendly character: it is meant to be a celebration where even the little ones can have fun, while adults sit together with a beer and bratwurst.

Shooting, King, and Procession

As with any North German Schützenfest, the competitions for the royal title are central. The new marksmen's king or queen is crowned in a festive proclamation, and the king's dinner on Sunday forms the social highlight. The procession through the district, accompanied by a marching band and clubs, with the reigning monarch, brings the entire village community together.

Wingst and the "Wingster Schweiz"

The municipality of Wingst is located in the southern Cuxhaven district, nestled in the natural paradise of the so-called "Wingster Schweiz" with its hills, forests, and viewpoints. Visitors to the Schützenfest can combine their stay with a hike or a walk in this charming landscape.

Practical Information for the 128th Edition

The exact date in 2026 will be announced by the Grift marksmen's club in the spring. Traditionally, the festival takes place in the summer. Admission to the festival grounds is free. For visitors from outside the area, arriving by car is recommended, as public transport is limited in rural areas.
