International Nature Film Festival with the German Nature Film Award Ceremony
Since its humble beginnings in 2005, the Darss Nature Film Festival has developed into one of Germany's most popular nature and environmental film festivals. The venue is the Baltic Sea peninsula of Fischland-Darss-Zingst in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – a region that is itself a natural star, with the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park and the autumnal crane migration. The festival is supported by the Deutsche NaturfilmStiftung gGmbH (German Nature Film Foundation) based in Wieck a.Darss.
The heart of the festival is the competition for the German Nature Film Award: Twelve nominated films compete against each other, with the jury and the audience jointly deciding on the winners. The festive award ceremony is the social highlight of the festival week.
The program is divided into numerous sections that reflect the entire spectrum of nature filmmaking:
The Nature Film Festival uses six venues: Wieck a.Darss, Prerow, Born, Zingst, and Ahrenshoop, as well as the Ozeaneum in Stralsund as an external location. This turns the entire peninsula into a festival stage – and allows the audience to combine cinema visits with walks through the landscape that the films portray.
The Darss Nature Film Festival 2026 will be held from October 6 to 11. Film submissions for the German Nature Film Award were possible from February 1 to March 31, 2026.
The festival presents nature films in the sections Competition, Tiefgang, Leuchtfeuer, Ausguck, Kakadu, NatureShorts, 360° Cinema Boat, Nature in Focus, and Literature Meets Nature. Screenings will take place in Wieck a.Darss, Prerow, Born, Zingst, and Ahrenshoop, as well as at the Ozeaneum Stralsund.
Twelve nominated films compete in the contest. The jury and the audience jointly decide on the award. The award ceremony will take place on October 10, 2026.
The complete program with film titles and screening times will be published by the Deutsche NaturfilmStiftung in the online program.
The venues are located on the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula. By car via the B105 and Barth; the nearest train stations are Barth and Stralsund (for the Ozeaneum). Local buses run between the locations.
Tickets and the online program are available via the official website of the German Nature Film Award.
The festival coincides with the autumnal crane migration – ideal for combining film screenings with nature observations in the national park.
