Premiere CSD in the Gütersloh district — Parade and street festival at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz as part of the Action Weeks for Diversity
Gütersloh makes history in 2026: On Saturday, May 23, 2026, the first Christopher Street Day will take place in this East Westphalia-Lippe city. While major cities like Cologne and Hamburg have hosted their Pride parades for decades, it is a premiere for Gütersloh — as the district capital of the Gütersloh district. The CSD is organized by the newly founded CSD Gütersloh e.V., with the support of the City of Gütersloh and a broad sponsorship from associations, religious communities, and institutions.
The CSD is embedded in a larger program: the "Action Days for Diversity" by the City of Gütersloh, running from May 11 to May 29, 2026. The kickoff on May 11 marks the start of the program week, organized around the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT, May 17). Planned program components:
The actual CSD on May 23, 2026, will take place at the central Konrad-Adenauer-Platz in Gütersloh's city center. It combines a demonstration / parade with a Pride street festival: floats, walking groups, queer associations and initiatives, live music, drag shows, and information booths. The format will be published in detail in the spring of 2026.
First City Councilor Henning Matthes emphasized in the official press release: "All people who live and work here with their diverse life plans enrich our city." Equality Officer Inge Trame added that it is about "spaces for encounter, information, and empowerment" in a polarized time. This political anchoring by the city leadership is unusual and makes the Gütersloh CSD a conscious commitment by the municipality to diversity.
Gütersloh is located in the district of Gütersloh, about 50 km east of Münster and 100 km west of Hanover. With around 100,000 inhabitants, the city is a small major city with a strong medium-sized profile — Bertelsmann is headquartered here, as is Miele. The city center around Konrad-Adenauer-Platz is car-free, well-maintained, and well-suited for an urban street festival.
The idea for a CSD in Gütersloh grew out of the city's and the surrounding rural region's growing queer community. While big-city CSDs are difficult for many queer people in the province to reach, Gütersloh is creating a Pride event for the East Westphalia region — with low-threshold access and the political message that visibility matters not only in Berlin, Cologne, or Hamburg, but also in Germany's mid-sized cities.
