The Lebusa post mill opens its doors for German Mill Day on Whit Monday
Post mills are the oldest type of rotatable windmills in Germany: the entire mill body rotates in the wind on a fixed post. Only a few examples remain in Brandenburg – the Lebusa post mill in the Elbe-Elster district is one of them. Today, it is a place of remembrance of the centuries-old milling tradition and the energy and craft history of southern Brandenburg.
German Mill Day has been celebrated annually on Whit Monday since 1994. Windmills, watermills, and floating mills open their doors to visitors nationwide. Millers, volunteers, and association members demonstrate grinding technology, explain the components, and give tours of the mills. It is one of the rare days when you can experience the sounds, smells, and movements of a working windmill live.
On May 25, 2026 – Whit Monday – the Lebusa post mill will open its doors. The mill is part of the event calendar of the Schlieben office, which coordinates dates in the region throughout the year. Visitors can expect guided tours, possibly a demonstration of the rotation and function, information about the mill's history, and a small catering offer from the volunteers.
The Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg was historically a land of millers, blacksmiths, and glassworks. Windmills and watermills shaped the landscape well into the 20th century. Today, many of these mills have disappeared, some are preserved by associations – and come alive again on days like Mill Day.
Mill Day opens the Lebusa post mill for guided tours and demonstrations. Volunteers on site will explain its construction, function, and history. A small catering offer completes the visit. Free admission.
The Lebusa post mill is part of the cultural calendar in the Schlieben office. Mill Day takes place nationwide on Whit Monday and is also celebrated in many other mills in Brandenburg.
