Special exhibition on craftsmanship through the centuries
The special exhibition "Craftsmanship. Then and Now" at the Regional Museum Neubrandenburg is dedicated to the diverse facets of craftsmanship. It ranges from historical professions and traditional working methods to modern forms of applied arts in an increasingly digitalized world. For centuries, craftsmanship has been a defining element of Neubrandenburg's city history.
The exhibition comprises around 150 objects. The oldest piece is an anvil from the Slavic period, dated to around the 10th century — a testament to the long tradition of metalworking professions in the region. Since the city's founding in 1248, craft businesses have played a central role in the economic and social life of Neubrandenburg.
The exhibition includes an accompanying program. A lecture titled "Medieval Craftsmanship in the Mirror of Archaeological Sources" will take place on June 2, 2026, at 6:30 PM; archaeologist Wiebke Schrader will speak about medieval craftsmanship and archaeological finds related to production and working methods within the city walls.
The Regional Museum Neubrandenburg documents the history of the city and the surrounding region. Neubrandenburg is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With the craftsmanship exhibition, the museum connects city history with a look at the present of a traditional economic sector.
