Family street festival in Leipzig South with around 130 stalls — May 10, 2026 (11 AM–6 PM)
The Connewitzer Straßenfest is a classic event in Leipzig's Connewitz district — one of the city's most vibrant and alternative neighborhoods. On Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 11 AM to 6 PM, this year's edition will take place around the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche and along Selneckerstraße — right in the heart of the Connewitz-Lößnig district. The organizers are the Protestant-Lutheran parishes of Connewitz-Lößnig — the street festival thus continues a tradition that combines social, religious, and cultural aspects.
Approximately 130 stalls line the festival mile: neighborhood clubs, citizen initiatives, religious organizations, social institutions, schools and kindergartens, artisans, organic bakers, fair-trade shops — a broad spectrum reflecting the socio-cultural diversity of Connewitz-Lößnig. Visitors to the street festival can get to know the district's civil society structures — from the tenants' association to the Initiativ-Kreis-Süd, from children's groups to the senior citizens' café.
Over the seven hours, a dense program unfolds on several stages: acrobatics and street art on the main stage, live music by bands from Leipzig South, puppet theater for children, dance workshops, and performances. The family program, in particular, is broadly appealing: face painting, game stations, craft activities — the street festival is deliberately aimed at all generations, from toddlers to seniors. Admission is free.
Leipzig — Saxony's largest city (around 600,000 inhabitants, independent city) — is one of Germany's youngest and fastest-growing cities after Berlin. The district of Connewitz in southern Leipzig has been considered an alternative neighborhood with a distinct subculture, a left-wing scene, and lively neighborhood politics for decades. The Connewitzer Straßenfest — supported by the local parishes — combines this alternative identity with an open, church-social tradition: a festival that showcases the diversity of an extraordinary Leipzig district.
