Summer Classics in the Märkische Schweiz

Buckow, the small spa town in the Märkische Schweiz, has a long tradition as a cultural refuge for Berliners. Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel spent summers here, Heinrich Mann recuperated by the Schermützelsee. 'Classical Music in the Green' builds on this heritage — a series of genuinely crafted chamber concerts in the park behind the former castle, financed by the Märkische Schweiz Tourism Association and curated with a good sense for diversity.

Eight Sundays, Eight Sound Worlds

The series opens on Whitsun Sunday with a saxophone quartet and ends at the end of August. In between, a harp duo, wind quintet, string quartet, and tango trio alternate. The programs range from Haydn and Hindemith to Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Argentinian tango and Franco-American chamber music. Each concert starts at 4 PM — perfect for a stroll by the Schermützelsee afterwards.

Ambiance and Admission

The castle park with its old trees is a picture-postcard motif even without a concert. Chairs are provided, the audience sits in loose rows, the sound mixes with birdsong. In bad weather, the concert takes place in Buckow Church. Tickets are available centrally through the Märkische Schweiz Tourist Information (033433 150031) or on-site. Admission: €12, reduced €8 — a fair price for a festival that manages without major sponsors.

Those arriving from Berlin (approx. 1.5 hours via the A12 or with the NEB from Berlin-Lichtenberg) often use the Sunday for a hike in the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park: Schermützelsee, Buckowsee, Krugberg. The mix of natural scenery, spa town charm, and sophisticated chamber music makes Classical Music in the Green a hidden gem in the Märkisch-Oderland district.
