Buckow in Summer — Brandenburg's Enchanted Small Town

Buckow (Märkische Schweiz) is one of Brandenburg's most atmospheric small towns. Nestled in the hilly, ice-age-formed landscape of the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park — Brandenburg's only nature area resembling a low mountain range — and situated on the Schermützelsee lake, Buckow was already a popular spa town in the 19th century. Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel spent their summers here; the Brecht-Weigel-House commemorates this tradition. When the 25th Long Night of Art and Nature begins on July 18, 2026, the town transforms into a stage — and visitors become explorers.

Studios, Gardens, and Special Places

The concept of the Long Night is simple and unique: When night falls, studios of local artists open their doors, private gardens become stages and small concert venues, and special places (courtyards, workshops, historic buildings, sometimes even natural spots at the edge of the forest) become part of the program. Visitors move from station to station with a map or program booklet — mostly on foot, as the town is compact. The atmosphere shifts between vibrant energy and quiet moments, with unexpected discoveries around every corner.

25th Anniversary 2026

The Long Night of Art and Nature will take place for the 25th time in 2026 — a format that has established itself since the early 2000s and has developed a loyal following over the years. The Märkische Schweiz Tourist Information coordinates the program; participating artists, galleries, and garden owners register in advance and design their stations individually. The anniversary year 2026 offers a special occasion to honor the format.

Art, Music, and Nature

The program typically includes: fine arts (painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking), arts and crafts (ceramics, textiles, jewelry, wood), music in the gardens (acoustic, classical, jazz, small band performances), theater or performance contributions, literary readings, nature experiences (guided walks, light installations in the garden). Buckow's restaurateurs — restaurants, cafés, and snack bars — also invite visitors and become part of the program.

Märkische Schweiz Nature Park

Buckow is located in the heart of the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park in the Märkisch-Oderland district. With its forests, lakes, gorges, and moors, the nature park is one of Brandenburg's most beautiful hiking areas — and the natural backdrop for the Long Night.
