About Klesmerfestival Salzgitter

For over a quarter of a century, the Festival of Klesmer and World Music in Salzgitter-Bad has been one of the most renowned open-air gatherings for Klezmer and world music in Northern Germany. For three days, the Klesmerplatz in the heart of the historic old town transforms into an international stage, where artists from around the globe present the musical heritage of Eastern Europe, the African continent, Latin America, and the Mediterranean region. The 27th edition takes place from May 29th to 31st, 2026, and features top acts such as Uusikuu from Finland, Helmut Eisel & Brass, Gankino Circus, Adjiri Odametey, and Tone Fish. Free admission.

A Stage for Klezmer and World Music

Since 2000, the cultural department of the City of Salzgitter has been inviting people to the Festival of Klesmer and World Music in Salzgitter-Bad. The Klesmerplatz, named after the festival, in the heart of the old town, provides the stage for three days of music, encounters, and vibrant cultural diversity. Over the years, the festival has evolved into an international meeting point that not only cherishes the Eastern Jewish Klezmer tradition but also consciously builds bridges to world music from all continents.

  • Uusikuu from Finland – Klezmer with a Nordic touch, influenced by tango and folk
  • Tico Tico – Brazilian Choro and Samba sounds
  • Gankino Circus – the Franconian genre acrobats between Klezmer, folk, and comedy

Saturday, May 30th, 2026 (from 5 PM)

  • Helmut Eisel & Brass – the Saarland clarinet virtuoso and his brass ensemble
  • Ben Waldraff Band – songs from Jewish tradition and world music
  • Adjiri Odametey – African roots from Ghana, at home in Germany
  • Andrew Murphy and Band – British-Irish folk-rock currents

Sunday, May 31st, 2026 (from 1 PM)

  • Soelter Kinder – Opening with the Salzgitter children's choir
  • LUMAÏO – Mediterranean soundscapes

Klesmerplatz – A Place with History

The Klesmerplatz received its name in recognition of the festival that has been held here for years. It is located in the center of Salzgitter-Bad's old town, surrounded by historic half-timbered buildings and a short walk from St. Maria Monastery Church and the market square. During breaks between concerts, the surroundings invite strolls and visits to the nearby cafés and restaurants.

Free Admission

The festival has always been a free offering from the City of Salzgitter. In doing so, it fulfills an important cultural policy objective: making music from around the world accessible to a broad audience and enabling intercultural encounters. Donations to support the artists are explicitly welcome.

Klesmerfestival Salzgitter — edition 2026

The 27th edition of the Festival of Klesmer and World Music takes place from May 29th to 31st, 2026, at Klesmerplatz in Salzgitter-Bad. Three days of open-air concerts featuring internationally renowned artists from Finland, Germany, Ghana, Brazil, Great Britain, and many other countries. Klezmer tradition meets world music, folk, brass, and jazz. Free admission. Organized by the Cultural Department of the City of Salzgitter.

The 2026 festival continues the tradition of placing Klezmer music in a global musical dialogue. The Finnish band Uusikuu opens on Friday with their Nordic interpretation of Klezmer, followed by Tico Tico with Brazilian Choro sounds and the Franconian genre acrobats Gankino Circus. Saturday brings Helmut Eisel & Brass, one of the most renowned clarinetists in the German Klezmer scene, to the stage, complemented by the Ben Waldraff Band, the Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Adjiri Odametey, and Andrew Murphy and Band. Sunday starts with the Salzgitter children's choir Soelter Kinder and leads through LUMAÏO, Lina Bó, to Tone Fish.
