Christmas market, Ferris wheel, children's area, ice rink — Karlsruhe's Advent marathon
During the Advent season, Karlsruhe positions itself as the "Christmas City of the Region" — an umbrella term for all Christmas events, markets, and activities in the city center and its districts. The event space opens on Monday, November 23, 2026, and runs until shortly after Christmas. The organizer is KME Karlsruhe Marketing und Event GmbH, under the auspices of the City of Karlsruhe.
The heart of the Christmas City is the Karlsruhe Christkindlesmarkt around the Marktplatz, at Friedrichsplatz, and in the adjacent streets. Over 100 decorated wooden huts offer classic Christmas market fare: mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, crêpes, potato pancakes, roasted almonds, gingerbread, handicrafts, nativity scenes, wood carvings, and Advent decorations. The architecture of the classicist Marktplatz, with Karlsruhe Castle in sight, provides a special backdrop.
Among the hallmarks of the Karlsruhe Christmas City are several attractions beyond the classic market:
Accompanying the Christmas City is an extensive cultural program: Advent concerts in churches (St. Stephan, Christuskirche, Stadtkirche), theater performances with Christmas themes, Flying Santa Performances, child-friendly readings, and nativity scene exhibitions. In the Durlach district, parallel Christmas market activities take place (Durlach Christmas Market at Saumarkt and Rathausplatz Durlach).
Karlsruhe (district 08212, approx. 305,000 inhabitants) is Baden-Württemberg's second-largest city after Stuttgart and home to the Federal Constitutional Court. The fan-shaped city layout, with the baroque palace as its starting point, makes Karlsruhe architecturally unique. During Advent, the city shines in a dense network of lights — the Christmas City makes particularly impressive use of this urban design.
Detailed dates, concert schedules, and special events for the 2026 Christmas City will likely be published on the official website in autumn/winter 2026. Confirmed so far: Start on November 23, 2026.
From November 23, 2026, the Karlsruhe city center will once again transform into the Christmas City. The classic Christkindlesmarkt around Marktplatz and Friedrichsplatz forms the heart, complemented by a Ferris wheel, Kinderland St. Stephan, an ice rink with a winter village, and an extensive cultural program.
In the Durlach district, parallel Christmas market events will take place. Advent concerts, theater, readings, and hands-on activities for children will complement the markets.
