Three days of Chinese culture, performance, and culinary delights in Duisburg city center
If you're looking for the German city with the closest ties to China, you can't overlook Duisburg. This Ruhr region city on the Rhine, with nearly 500,000 inhabitants, is the terminus of the Trans-Eurasia Express, the longest and most frequently used container train between China and Europe. Every week, containers from Wuhan, Chongqing, and Yiwu arrive at the Duisburg inland port—the largest in the world. This economic interconnectedness has also gained a cultural dimension over the years: Chinese students at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Confucius Institute, regular cultural weeks—and since 2023, the Chinafest as an annual major cultural event.
The Chinafest 2026 runs from Friday, September 4th to Sunday, September 6th, 2026. Three days of programming at several venues in Duisburg city center:
The festival is organized around three thematic focus areas:
The focus is on direct intercultural dialogue between the Duisburg and Chinese populations. Booths from local Chinese associations and initiatives, discussion forums, language cafés (Mandarin mini-crash course), and networking events. Goal: to shape the festival not just as a tourism event, but as a meeting place for the Chinese community in the Ruhr area and the German population of Duisburg.
On the stage at the Theater am Marientor and on open-air stages in the city center, artists present Chinese performing arts: traditional dance forms, classical music (Pipa, Guzheng, Erhu), excerpts from Peking Opera, calligraphy demonstrations, contemporary Chinese pop and independent music. A mix of classical-traditional and modern-contemporary.
An extensive culinary mile with stalls from local Chinese restaurants and caterers from the Ruhr region. Authentic specialties from various Chinese regional cuisines (Sichuan, Cantonese, Shanghai, Beijing), tea tastings, dim sum, hot pot, Peking duck, mooncakes, bubble tea. For many visitors, the culinary mile is the most frequently visited program point.
The organizer is the Association of Chinese Women in Germany e.V.—a women's organization of the Chinese diaspora active in North Rhine-Westphalia for years. The association sees itself as a bridge-builder between German and Chinese society, organizing educational programs, cultural events, and advice. The Chinafest is their most ambitious project and, at the same time, their greatest public visibility. Cooperation partners are Duisburg Kontor (municipal tourism and event GmbH) and the Chinese Consulate General in Düsseldorf.
The Chinafest is part of the growing context of German-Chinese cultural events. With the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Düsseldorf, the Confucius Institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen, regular Chinese Weeks in Cologne and Frankfurt, and the Trans-Eurasia Express Center in Duisburg, the Rhineland has become a veritable hub for German-Chinese cultural encounters. The Chinafest fits into this event landscape as a permanent fixture.
As of May 2026, the detailed program is still under development—the organizer will communicate the exact program content continuously via the official website. The three-day structure, the venues (city center and Theater am Marientor), and the three-pillar architecture are known. Admission to most program points in the city center is free; programs at the Theater am Marientor may require tickets.
The 2026 edition continues the established three-pillar structure: Encounter, Inspiration, and Enjoyment as thematic guiding principles shape the program. Venues include the central city squares (with a culinary mile and open-air stages) and the Theater am Marientor (for stage programs, concerts, and dance performances). Detailed program will be communicated continuously.
