Culture in the Village Churches
The Candlelight Concerts in the Uecker-Randow Region are a travelling concert series in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It uses the village churches and special venues of the historic Uecker-Randow region in southeastern Vorpommern – between Ueckermünde on the Baltic Sea and Penkun near the Polish border.
18 Concerts at 16 Locations
Spread throughout the year, a total of 18 concerts take place at 16 different locations. The venues are historic brick churches and barns, which develop a very special atmosphere in the warm glow of numerous candles. At the opening concert in Wetzenow, alphorns sounded before around 400 candles and more than 160 guests – an image that represents the concept of the series.
Diverse Programme
The musical spectrum of the Candlelight Concerts is broad: classical, folk, chanson, and world music are performed, as well as literary-musical programmes. For example, in Rothenklempenow, Berlin actress and singer Susanne Jansen performed, and in Fahrenwalde, the duo Klara Gmiter and Liliana Kostrezewa presented the programme 'Women's Voices'. The concerts combine the artistic experience with the special space of the village church.
A Project for the Villages
The Candlelight Concerts are a project of the #DorfVernetzt# network, supported by, among others, the association Q-Dorf e.V. and the cultural initiative 'Dorfkirche mon amour'. The motto 'from the village for the village – for a vibrant community' describes the aim: culture should also be accessible in rural areas and connect the villages of the region. Admission to the concerts is usually free; donations are requested.
Getting There
The venues are spread across the entire Uecker-Randow region. Ueckermünde and Penkun are accessible via the B109 and B113 federal highways. The respective village churches are located in the surrounding communities – the programme of the series will announce the exact locations.
