Medieval times above the Woblitz
The Burgfest Wesenberg is the major summer festival of Wesenberg, a small town in the Mecklenburg Lake District south of Neustrelitz. The venue is Burg Wesenberg, which Prince Nikolaus von Werle had built in the mid-13th century. With its preserved keep, it is one of the most striking castles in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and forms the backdrop for a festival that keeps the town's history and traditions alive.
Night watchman, town founder, and castle play
The castle festival traditionally begins with the night watchman's tour, during which the mayor symbolically hands over the town hall key to the town founder Nikolaus von Werle. The highlight is the historic castle play, in which amateur actors stage episodes from Wesenberg's history. Afterwards, the most beautiful historical costumes are awarded prizes.
Knightly performances, parade, and fireworks
On the festival meadow below the castle, knights compete in show fights, a historical parade moves through the town, and in the evening, fireworks illuminate the sky above the castle. Music in the castle courtyard, exuberant dancing, market stalls with crafts and food, as well as a program with a tombola, clowns, and a fire show for families round off the two-day festival.
A festival by the Castle Association
The castle festival is supported by the Burgverein Wesenberg e.V., which is dedicated to the preservation of the castle and the town's history. The voluntary commitment makes the festival a true community event where the people of Wesenberg stage their own history.
