Anniversary 666 Years of Castle Ruins — June 6/7, 2026 in the Castle Ruins
Bad Liebenstein is a traditional spa town in the Wartburg district, on the western edge of the Thuringian Forest. With its healing springs, the spa park, and the nearby Altenstein Castle — the summer residence of the Dukes of Meiningen, where Johannes Brahms composed — the town has been a center of Thuringian spa tourism since the 19th century. With around 7,500 inhabitants, it has remained manageable — its charm lies in the intact natural landscape surrounding it.
High above Bad Liebenstein sits the castle ruins — a medieval castle complex, the remains of which now serve as a popular hiking destination and viewpoint. The Lords of Stein were first enfeoffed with the castle in 1360 — this date forms the basis for the '666 Years' anniversary in 2026. Over the centuries, ownership changed, and the castle fell into disrepair from the 17th century onwards. Today, the remains of the walls are voluntarily maintained by the association Natur- und Heimatfreunde e. V. Bad Liebenstein and made accessible for events.
The castle festival is a tradition that the association has cultivated for years. What makes it special: the unique backdrop of the castle ruins — stone walls, towers, courtyard, view over the Thuringian Forest — creates an atmosphere that no modern venue can replicate. Saturday evening is a live music evening with regional cuisine and drinks — a proven mix of festival tent atmosphere and medieval ambiance. Sunday is Family Day: morning pint (Frühschoppen) with brass band music starting at 10:00 AM, children's program, club stands, surprises. The association is particularly looking forward to the 666th anniversary in 2026 as the highlight of their club work.
The Wartburg district is one of the most scenically diverse regions of Thuringia — from Wartburg Castle in Eisenach in the north to the Rennsteig in the south, the famous high-altitude hiking trail along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest. Bad Liebenstein is located on the western edge of this low mountain range, with direct access to hiking trails towards Inselsberg and Rennsteig. The castle festival combines well with a hiking day in the region — from the spa park to the castle ruins and further towards Altenstein.
The anniversary commemorates the year 1360, when the Lords of Stein were first enfeoffed with the castle. 666 years have passed since then — a span that the Natur- und Heimatfreunde e. V. association honors with a particularly carefully prepared castle festival. The association, which has been voluntarily maintaining the castle ruins for years, has announced an expanded program with additional surprises for 2026.
