17th Deister Day — A Region Celebrates Its Mountain
At 405 meters, the Deister is the highest mountain in the western surroundings of Hannover and one of Lower Saxony's most popular local recreation areas. Six municipalities — Bad Münder, Bad Nenndorf, Barsinghausen, Rodenberg, Springe, and Wennigsen — share its slopes, forests, hiking trails, and tourist infrastructure. In the Deister Day, they have found a joint format that makes the connection between these municipalities visible and cultivates the Deister as a common brand of identity. The 17th edition will take place on May 10, 2026.
Six Municipalities, One Mountain
The idea of the joint Deister Day is simple and effective: On one day, annually in early May, all six Deister municipalities organize coordinated program offerings. Each municipality sets its own focus — hikes, guided tours, concerts, family programs, culinary offerings — and together they create a broad mosaic of experiences around the mountain. Visitors can either concentrate on one municipality or use the day for a short tour of the Deister region.
Wennigsen Location: Reiteranger and Wasserpark
In Wennigsen, the 2026 Deister Day includes two venues. The Reiteranger hiking parking lot in Bredenbeck serves as the hiking center — the adventure tour with Deister-Winni, the Deister's mascot character, through the Kniggeforst starts here at 10:30 AM. This tour is family-friendly and takes children, parents, and hiking enthusiasts into the forest. The Wasserpark natural swimming pool at Bröhnweg 15 is the second point of contact — with program items on nature conservation, water ecology, and family activities.
Jazz Brunch and Culinary Delights
A special element of the Wennigsen Deister Day is the Jazz Brunch at Toppiusplatz in Wennigser Mark. Acoustic jazz music, accompanied by brunch catering — a calm, tasteful version of the Deister program that complements the active nature program with a cultural component. With free admission and an all-day program from 11 AM to 4:30 PM, the Deister Day is an accessible, family-friendly event that combines the start of the hiking season with a nature experience.
