Altenstein – English Landscape Park in the Rhön
Altenstein Palace Park is considered one of the most beautiful English landscape parks in Central Germany. Converted from 1888/89 in the English cottage style by Duke Georg II of Meiningen, Altenstein Palace was the summer residence of the "Theater Duke" for decades – the prince who made the Meiningen Court Theater one of the most important stages in Europe. The park features the Luisenthal Waterfall, Devil's Bridge, Chinese Pavilion, Morning Gate, and the famous Carpet Bed, which is replanted annually according to historical patterns.

The Theater Duke would have turned 200 years old in 2026. The Parkfest Altenstein 2026 is dedicated to this anniversary: the salon orchestra, brass band, theater performances, and readings connect to the Duke's passion for theater.
Daytime Program Free – Evening with Tickets
A special feature of the Parkfest: The entire daytime program – music, theater, fairy tales, readings, art at various locations – is free. Only the evening concerts require tickets – tickets are available at comödienhaus.de, the performance venue of the Meiningen Court Orchestra in Bad Liebenstein.

Festival Weekend for the Theater Duke
On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen, the famous "Theater Duke," the Friends of Altenstein Association (Förderverein Altenstein e.V.) is organizing a grand park festival together with the town of Bad Liebenstein. For three days, the historic palace park will be transformed into an open cultural stage.
Connection to Meiningen
The music comes from Meiningen – both the Salonorchester Meininger Mélange and the Brassband Temple of Boom are rooted in the Meiningen music scene. This connection honors Georg II's cultural heritage.

Friday, August 21, 2026 – Opening Evening
- Evening – Salonorchester Meininger Mélange (Opera and operetta, famous arias and duets)

Saturday, August 22, 2026 – Main Program Day
- 10:00 AM–6:00 PM – Daytime program throughout the park (free)
- Music, theater, fairy tale performances, readings, art
- Locations: Inner park, Luisenthal Waterfall, Devil's Bridge, Morning Gate, Chinese Pavilion
- Evening – Concert by the Meininger Brassband «Temple of Boom» in the inner park (ticketed, tickets via comödienhaus.de)
Sunday, August 23, 2026 – Closing Day
- 10:00 AM–6:00 PM – Continuation of the daytime program (free)

Car: A4 exit Eisenach-West, B19 towards Meiningen, exit Bad Liebenstein. Train: Immelborn / Bad Salzungen station, bus to Bad Liebenstein and Altenstein.
