Unusual concert formats in historic locations — Brahms and his world in Palais Weimar and Altenstein Castle Park
The Brahms Festival Meiningen-Altenstein commemorates the close relationship between Johannes Brahms and the Meiningen Court Orchestra and Altenstein Castle. The composer spent several summers in Meiningen and Bad Liebenstein between 1881 and 1895 and valued the orchestra under Hans von Bülow as the ideal ensemble for his works. In 2026, the Brahms Festival in Bad Liebenstein will run from May 21st to 25th — featuring three special events in three historic locations.
The opening is on Thursday, May 21st at 7:30 PM in the Palais Weimar in Bad Liebenstein — the former Prinzenhaus (Princes' House) of the Saxe-Meiningen ducal family. Soprano Alexandra Wija (Meininger Theater) and pianist Heiko Denner will present the scenic concert «Sie liebten sich beide, doch ...» — a portrait of the lifelong relationship between Brahms and Clara Schumann, marked by mutual admiration and tragic distance. Lieder, piano works, and excerpts from letters are woven into a scenic narrative.
On Saturday, May 24th at 3 PM, the Spohr Quartet with guest soloist Alexey Stadler (violoncello) will perform in Altenstein Castle Park. The program includes string quartet works from Brahms's circle. The concert takes place in the historic park where Brahms strolled and composed during his summer stays — an authentic performance venue with a special genius loci.
On Sunday, May 25th, the festival in Bad Liebenstein concludes with a park tour through Altenstein Castle Park. It follows the historical footsteps of Brahms, the Saxe-Meiningen ducal family, and the composers who were guests in Altenstein during the summer months. The park is part of the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and is considered one of the most beautiful landscape parks in Central Germany.
The traditional spa town of Bad Liebenstein in the Wartburg District (State of Thuringia) has been a spa resort since the 17th century and has been associated with Altenstein Castle since the 19th century, which the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen used as a summer residence. The Brahms Festival connects this aristocratic-musical tradition with contemporary concert formats. Travel via A4 motorway or by train to Bad Liebenstein.
The 2026 season focuses on a special theme: the lifelong relationship between Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. The scenic concert at Palais Weimar combines songs, piano works, and letters from the two to create a poignant narrative. The following days lead to the Spohr program and the historic Altenstein Castle Park, where Brahms actually walked.
