Traditional civic festival on the last Saturday of July in the market town of Laaber
The Bürgerfest Laaber is the central civic event of the Upper Palatinate market town of Laaber. The municipality, located in the valley of the Schwarze Laber west of Regensburg in the district of Regensburg, with around 4,800 inhabitants, has the typical character of a medieval market town — with the famous Laaber castle ruins as its landmark, the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt, and a well-preserved market square.
The Bürgerfest traditionally takes place on the last Saturday of July — in close proximity to St. James' Day (July 25th). This connection with the patron saint's day of the Apostle James and the tradition of patron saints of many Upper Palatinate church communities has grown historically: Civic festivals were often held around important saints' days for centuries. In Laaber, this tradition has remained alive.
The festival program includes several music stages with different genres: brass music from the local band, cover and party bands, acoustic sets by singer-songwriters. The stages are spread across the market square and adjacent streets, offering a walking tour experience. The Laaber clubs — fire department, sports club, folk dancers, fruit and horticultural association (organizer), music band, parish youth — each manage their own stands with Upper Palatinate specialties: dumplings, bratwurst, roast pork, homemade cakes, regional beer, and wine.
The organizer for years has been the Obst- und Gartenbauverein Laaber (Fruit and Horticultural Association), which belongs to the Regensburg district association. Thus, the festival has a cultural and cultural-historical dimension in addition to its folk festival character: plant exhibitions, gardening tips, traditional orchard actions, and tastings of local fruit varieties and juices complement the program.
The Bürgerfest Laaber is manageable in a positive sense — not an anonymous mass event, but a consistently civic occasion where neighbors, club members, and guests from surrounding communities meet. The medieval market setting, the peaceful atmosphere of the Schwarze Laber valley, and the family-friendly size make it a charming summer festival away from the major folk festival routes.
The 2026 Bürgerfest runs on Saturday, July 25, from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. — as traditionally on the last Saturday of July, close to St. James' Day. The market square and town center will be pedestrianized for the duration of the festival, with several stages spread across the festival area.
The Laaber clubs will be present with their own stands and provide the culinary offerings. The festival program ranges from brass music and cover bands to acoustic sets and DJ performances in the late evening.
