Largest Volksfest in the town of Schkölen — Castle, City Centre, and Saale-Holzland District
The Burg- und Stadtfest Schkölen is the most important summer festival of the small town in the Saale-Holzland district. The venue is the historic Schkölen Castle as well as the surrounding city centre. The town of Schkölen organises the festival together with local clubs — the administrative community Heideland-Elstertal-Schkölen supports the logistics.
The programme offers a wide range of activities for the whole family: live music on the open-air stage at the castle grounds, regional food and drinks, stalls with arts and crafts and local producers, a children's carousel, and a bouncy castle. Rotating performances by regional bands and clubs characterise the evening, while Sunday is traditionally dedicated to the family programme.
Schkölen Castle is the defining structure of the town and a landmark of the Saale-Holzland district. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages. During the Burg- und Stadtfest, the area opens its gates to visitors, complemented by guided tours and a historical accompanying programme in the castle courtyard.
The town of Schkölen (around 2,800 inhabitants) is located in the Saale-Holzland district in the state of Thuringia, between Eisenberg and Naumburg on the border with Saxony-Anhalt. The rural region between the Saale and Elster rivers is characterised by agriculture and small villages — the Burg- und Stadtfest is one of the few major events that attracts regional guests annually and enlivens the castle grounds and city centre for a long festival weekend.
The town of Schkölen is planning the Burg- und Stadtfest 2026 according to the usual pattern — the date, programme, and performances will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival. The venue remains Schkölen Castle and the city centre. Comparisons from previous years: August 24, 2024, May 31, 2025.
