Comeback after a two-year break — the largest street festival tradition in southern Essen returns
The Brunnenfest Kettwig is the most traditional street festival event in southern Essen — for decades the most important date in the district calendar. After a two-year break (reasons cited varied in district communication — consequence of the pandemic, organizational restructuring, safety concepts), the festival returns from September 11th to 13th, 2026. For Kettwig, the comeback is a locally much-discussed event accompanied by great expectations — accordingly, it is advertised as a "return after a break".
The old town of Essen-Kettwig, with its half-timbered houses, parish church, market square, and main street, provides the backdrop. Unlike large city festivals concentrated on a festival site, the Brunnenfest permeates the entire old town — embedded in the historic buildings on the banks of the Ruhr.
The organizer is the Kettwiger Interessengemeinschaft (KettIN) — the association of Kettwig retailers, restaurateurs, and service providers, which has been coordinating district activities in Kettwig for years. KettIN is driving the revival of the Brunnenfest and has restructured the concept for 2026 — with an improved safety concept, clear sponsorship, and communication support. This organization of local businesses makes the Brunnenfest an authentic district event.
Kettwig is the southernmost district of the city of Essen — located on the Ruhr, on the border with the Bergisches Land and the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis. With around 17,000 inhabitants and a historic old town with half-timbered houses, a medieval market square, and a parish church, Kettwig differs significantly from the industrial character of the rest of Essen's urban area. Visitors to Kettwig feel more like they are in a Rhenish small town than in the Ruhr area — this contrast creates its special charm. Sights: the Marktkirche Kettwig, the weir on the Ruhr, and the Kettwiger Stausee (Kettwig Reservoir) for water sports.
For Kettwig, the Brunnenfest is the most important district event of the year — comparable to a Volksfest (popular festival), but with the character of a street festival. The two-year break has been noticeably missed in the district; the 2026 comeback is accordingly important for local identity. Visitors to the Brunnenfest experience authentic Kettwig civic pride — and can discover the district as an independent world in southern Essen.
The 2026 edition brings Essen-Kettwig's most important district event back after a two-year break. KettIN, as the organizer, has restructured the concept — the historic old town gets its most important festival date back for three days. For Essen's southernmost district, the comeback is a weekend much discussed locally and accompanied by high expectations.
