48th edition of the traditional four-day autumn Volksfest with Bockbier (strong beer) service and festival tent in the Neckar-Odenwald district
Since the late 1970s, the Bretzinger Bockbierfest has been one of the quintessential autumn Volksfests in the Neckar-Odenwald district. The small Hardheim district of Bretzingen (around 700 inhabitants) in the Franconian Odenwald fills up for four days with guests from all over the Bauland region and beyond — many return annually because the festival has maintained its authentic community character: no professional organizers, but three village clubs working together.
The namesake is Bockbier — the stronger, maltier autumn beer style with a higher original wort content. It flows freshly tapped in the large festival tent, alongside Hefeweizen, Pils, Radler, and non-alcoholic alternatives. The classic Maß (liter mug) is served in traditional Franconian-Odenwald style, relaxed.
Friday, 9 October: Festival opening in the late afternoon with traditional Bockbier tapping. Evening program with a live band for a younger audience, festival tent atmosphere until late into the night.
Saturday, 10 October: Main evening of the festival — pre-program with a brass band from the late afternoon, a big party band in the full festival tent in the evening. Atmosphere guaranteed: swaying, singing along, dancing.
Sunday, 11 October: Classic Frühschoppen from 10 a.m. with brass music from the Bretzingen Music Association and guest bands from the Bauland region. Lunch with Sunday roast. Afternoon family program, cake buffet, tombola. Quieter in the evening than on Saturday, but well attended.
Monday, 12 October: Traditionally the "Heimattag" (homecoming day) — smaller scale, many regular guests, closing with remaining Bockbier and festival tent melancholy.
Classic Bauland festival tent fare: Rotisserie chicken, pork roast with dumplings, sausages and steaks from the grill, fries, sauerkraut, served with pretzels, and on Sunday the traditional crackling roast. Sweets from the cake counter of the club ladies.
In addition to the festival tent, there are rides (carousel, bumper cars, smaller family attractions) and market stalls at the Bockbierfest. Kept family-friendly — Bretzingen is not the Munich Oktoberfest, but a village Volksfest with a local atmosphere.
The municipality of Hardheim (AGS 08125, Neckar-Odenwald district) is located in the Franconian Odenwald foothills, the historical region of "Bauland". Bretzingen is one of the Hardheim districts with around 700 inhabitants, characterized by its village life, with the sports grounds in the valley. The clubs — fire brigade, music, sports — are the backbone of village life, and the Bockbierfest is their big joint project.
The 2026 Bockbierfest runs over a long weekend from Friday to Monday. Friday opens with the Bockbier tapping, Saturday is the big party night with a live band, Sunday is dedicated to the Frühschoppen with brass music, and Monday offers a relaxed end to the festival.
