Advent magic in the castle courtyard with Zehntscheune and Marstall — 1st Advent in the Madonnenland
The Christmas market at Hardheim Castle is one of the most atmospheric Advent markets in the Neckar-Odenwald district and the so-called Madonnenländchen. The venue is the Hardheim Castle Square with the historic Zehntscheune (today a local history museum and event space) and the former Marstall (stables). The approximately 800-year-old walls provide an impressive backdrop for the market's wooden huts, fairy lights, and fir branches.
In 2026, the 1st Advent weekend falls on November 27th, 28th, and 29th. The market starts on Friday at 6 PM with a festive opening — the mayor, pastor, and the chairman of the trade association light the castle Christmas tree. On Saturday and Sunday, the main activity settles between 3 PM to 9 PM and 1 PM to 8 PM, respectively. More than 40 stalls from Hardheim clubs, the Red Cross, the fire department, the parish, and artisans from the Madonnenland offer mulled wine, Christmas cookies, bratwurst, Maultaschen, and handmade gifts.
The stage program is spread across all three days: The Hardheim Music Association, the Sängerkreis (singers' circle), kindergarten groups, and the Trachtenkapelle (traditional costume band) take turns on the main stage. The highlight is the visit of St. Nicholas on Saturday afternoon (3 PM) — children can hand in wish lists and receive small gift bags. The local history room in the Marstall also opens with extended special hours — a rare opportunity to visit the collection of historical costumes and equipment from the Madonnenland.
Hardheim is the central market town of the so-called Madonnenländchen — a landscape in the south of the Odenwald shaped by Catholic tradition, which gets its name from the numerous wayside shrines and statues of Mary along the field paths. The region between Hardheim, Walldürn (with the well-known pilgrimage to the Holy Blood), and Höpfingen cultivates a particularly intense Advent culture. The Hardheim Castle Square with the former Hardheim Castle has been the social center of this tradition for generations.
Hardheim is located about 35 kilometers southeast of Tauberbischofsheim and a good 30 kilometers from Buchen (Odenwald). Accessible by car via the B 27 or the Madonnenlandstraße. A combined visit with the Advent markets in Walldürn, Buchen, and Külsheim can be well realized on a weekend — the region advertises with the joint concept "Adventswege im Madonnenland" (Advent Trails in the Madonnenland).
The 2026 edition follows the proven tradition: opening on Friday evening with a festive speech and Christmas tree lighting, Saturday and Sunday program with clubs, artisans, and stage shows. St. Nicholas visits the children on Saturday at 3 PM.
The market extends across the castle square and utilizes the historic buildings — Zehntscheune and Marstall — as covered spaces for special exhibitions, crafts, and club stalls.
