Pinot Noir specialty wine festival for over 30 years in the Pinot Noir village at the foot of the Reichsburg Trifels
The Burgunderweinfest in Annweiler-Gräfenhausen is a tribute to Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and its sister grape varieties. For over 30 years, the Gräfenhausen vintners have celebrated a wine festival on the third weekend in June, consistently focusing on the Pinot Noir family. The 2026 edition will take place from June 19th to 21st, 2026, on Hans-Stöcklein-Platz in the Gräfenhausen district of Annweiler.
Gräfenhausen is considered the "Pinot Noir village" of the Southern Palatinate – a nickname the place earned through its consistent specialization in Pinot Noir grape varieties. Its location at the foot of the Reichsburg Trifels and at the entrance to the Wasgau region provides the scenic backdrop, while the wines give the festival its unmistakable character.
The focus on the Pinot Noir family distinguishes the Gräfenhausen festival from other Palatinate wine festivals. Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), and Frühburgunder are the focus of the tasting. In addition, the vintners offer cuvées, sparkling wines, and rosé wines based on or blended with Pinot Noir vines.
Since the 1980s, Annweiler-Gräfenhausen has consciously positioned itself as a "Pinot Noir village." The vintner community primarily cultivates Pinot Noir varieties on the slopes around the village, which find excellent conditions in the sheltered valley with its warm microclimate. The nickname "Pinot Noir village" has been anchored with signs, a fountain in the village square, and a solid marketing concept.
Hans-Stöcklein-Platz in the center of Gräfenhausen is the main festival area. During the weekend, the square is used for the festival tent, the vintners' serving stands, the stage, and the food court. The atmosphere is familiar, the format manageable – not a mass event, but a wine weekend for a discerning audience.
Gräfenhausen lies in the shadow of the Reichsburg Trifels, which, as a former imperial castle from the Salian era and the location of the imperial regalia, is one of the most important castles in Southern Germany. Visitors to the Burgunderweinfest often combine it with a hike to Trifels Castle, a visit to the replicas of the imperial regalia, or a walk through the Wasgau forest.
