Guest performance by the Münchner Volkstheater in the Passionstheater Oberammergau
»Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewig Leben« is one of the most famous Bavarian stage plays. It tells the story of a cunning old man who gets the Boandlkramer – Death in Bavarian guise – drunk on cherry liqueur and tricks him out of extra years of life in a card game. A heavenly transgression that brings Saint Peter into play: The Boandlkramer must ultimately convince Brandner to show him the beauty of paradise.
The production comes from the Münchner Volkstheater and is a production by artistic director Christian Stückl. Set design: Alu Walter, costumes: Ingrid Jäger, music: the Riederinger Musikanten. Press reviews highlight the "bawdy humor" (Abendzeitung) and praise an unusually youthful, agile, and seductive interpretation of Death (taz).
The venue is the Passionstheater Oberammergau – the covered open-air stage where the famous Passionsspiele (Passion Plays) have been performed every ten years since 1634. In the "passion-free" years, the theatre is used as a regular summer performance venue. A guest performance of the Brandner Kaspar in this location combines Bavarian folk theatre with the monumental atmosphere of the Werdenfelser Land.
In the summer of 2026, the Münchner Volkstheater will perform the Brandner Kaspar on two evenings in Oberammergau. Performances are scheduled for Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th, 2026, both starting at 7:30 PM in the Passionstheater.
The ensemble of the Münchner Volkstheater will be on stage in Christian Stückl's production, accompanied by live music from the Riederinger Musikanten. Set design: Alu Walter, costumes: Ingrid Jäger. Text and adaptation: Kurt Wilhelm after Franz von Kobell.
Kurt Wilhelm after Franz von Kobell: Brandner Kaspar outwits the Boandlkramer in a card game for extra years of life – a stroke of luck that brings Saint Peter into play.
