Lights on the North Sea Coast

Büsum, Schleswig-Holstein's most famous crab port in the Dithmarschen district, has positioned itself as a creative light festival location in recent years. While the region traditionally attracts visitors in the summer, the Tourismus Marketing Service Büsum has created an autumn highlight with the Lichterwochenenden (Light Weekends) that extends the season and establishes Büsum as a year-round holiday destination.

The Permanently Illuminated Locations

Throughout the entire period, several locations in Büsum are continuously illuminated, regardless of the daily program:

• The Lighthouse — Büsum's landmark in changing colors
• The Fishing Cutters in the Harbour — a popular photo motif
• The Büsum Lettering at the harbour
• The Wohlfühl­garten with illuminated shadow wall
• The Rathaus­park and Brunnenplatz

Action Weekends with Live Programme

On the Light Weekends (usually two weekends in late October and early November), live show elements are added:

• “Flames of Water” — one of Germany's largest mobile live water shows
• “Harlekin on Fire” — fire and light show on the harbour quay
• “Lichtermeer” (Sea of Lights) — dance performances by the bellyqueens
• Light installations by Walter System
• Lantern parades by the Büsum youth fire brigade
• Guided tours with Büsum guest guides to the light highlights

A Meaningful Season Extension

The Light Weekends are deliberately scheduled for the end of the autumn holidays to give families another reason for a late-season visit to Büsum. Hotels, restaurants, and the harbour aquarium, as well as the museum by the sea, benefit from the visitor frequency. The event is accessible free of charge with the Büsumer Gästekarte — an additional incentive to stay another night on the North Sea coast in autumn.
