Lights on the North Sea Coast
Büsum, Schleswig-Holstein's most famous crab port in the Dithmarschen district, has positioned itself as a creative light festival location in recent years. While the region traditionally attracts visitors in the summer, the Tourismus Marketing Service Büsum has created an autumn highlight with the Lichterwochenenden (Light Weekends) that extends the season and establishes Büsum as a year-round holiday destination.
The Permanently Illuminated Locations
Throughout the entire period, several locations in Büsum are continuously illuminated, regardless of the daily program:
- The Lighthouse — Büsum's landmark in changing colors
- The Fishing Cutters in the Harbour — a popular photo motif
- The Büsum Lettering at the harbour
- The Wohlfühlgarten with illuminated shadow wall
- The Rathauspark and Brunnenplatz
Action Weekends with Live Programme
On the Light Weekends (usually two weekends in late October and early November), live show elements are added:
- “Flames of Water” — one of Germany's largest mobile live water shows
- “Harlekin on Fire” — fire and light show on the harbour quay
- “Lichtermeer” (Sea of Lights) — dance performances by the bellyqueens
- Light installations by Walter System
- Lantern parades by the Büsum youth fire brigade
- Guided tours with Büsum guest guides to the light highlights
A Meaningful Season Extension
The Light Weekends are deliberately scheduled for the end of the autumn holidays to give families another reason for a late-season visit to Büsum. Hotels, restaurants, and the harbour aquarium, as well as the museum by the sea, benefit from the visitor frequency. The event is accessible free of charge with the Büsumer Gästekarte — an additional incentive to stay another night on the North Sea coast in autumn.

Two Weekends Full of Light
The 2026 edition of the Light Weekends continues the proven concept, focusing on the weekend of November 1 and 2, when the programme intensifies: live shows, fire performances, and dance performances are added to the continuous illumination of the harbour facilities. The illumination of the permanent locations (lighthouse, cutters, Wohlfühlgarten, Rathauspark) runs daily from October 26 to November 3.

- 6:00 PM–10:00 PM — Light installations + first Walter System highlights in the Rathauspark
Saturday, October 31 – Sunday, November 1, 2026 — Halloween Weekend
- 6:00 PM — Lights switched on
- 7:00 PM–9:00 PM — Lantern parade by the youth fire brigade (Meeting point: Harbour square)
- 8:00 PM — “Lichtermeer” — Dance performance by the bellyqueens on the bridge
- 9:00 PM — Guided tour with Büsum guest guides
Monday, November 2, 2026 — Main Action Day
- 6:00 PM — Illumination on

Admission to all programme items is free with a valid Büsumer Gästekarte (included in hotels and holiday apartments). Day visitors pay the usual visitor's tax.

Getting There
Büsum train station (terminus of the Marschbahn line from Heide/Hamburg). By car via the B203 / A23 (exit Heide-Süd). Parking available at the harbour and the train station.
Opening Hours
Illumination of permanent locations daily 6:00 PM–10:00 PM. Live programme on the light weekends.
Admission
Free for guests with a valid Büsumer Gästekarte (included in hotels and holiday apartments). Day visitors pay the visitor's tax (approx. €2.50 per day).
